Modding a car...yay or nay?

Dunlop do not make a tyre called 'Rain Sport'.

I think given that it seems you have no real idea what tyres you had fitted, its safe to assume you have a similar level of knowledge about the rest of the things on your car.

Therefore I am inclined to beleive that the clued up one in this thread is Bear.

no wonder you had oversteer if you have non existant tyres fitted :D

I'm done with arguing in fact i'll come clean

The car was an ex right off, it was a cut and shut with half the rear end from another car and it had been jigged and the chasis legs welded, badly I might add, it had a missmatch of cheap tyres all round and it had finance owed on it and I paid £1000 more than the book price because I wanted it so badly and only did the HPI after I bought it, its the only performance car i've ever had and it scared me so much i'll never own another again, I couldnt handle the power and tried to drive it everywhere with my foot to the floor and it nearly killed me numerous times :o

I was all for giving this up but what about the personal attacks on me?

I'm the one who has repeatedly tried to diffuse this

What is it with the selective reading in this section

There are no personal attacks on you.

On the other hand you typed this..

"Oh STFU and stop going on with yourself"

A forum is a mixture of opinions, if you don't like someone's opinion, either reply constructively in a non personal manner, or don't reply at all

Obviously you have not read the full discussion in detail so i'll take your post with a pinch of salt

In fact if you hadnt of posted anything at all this thread it wouldnt still be going but for some reason you are replying which blatently shows you havent read the thread properly and saying that i'm the one making personal attacks because I said "STFU" have you read any of Bears replies? Bit strange, possible ulterior motive i've read far worse than that on here and the only thing now keeping this going is you, i've mentioned numerous times as has Bear that I want to drop it, why keep it going?

Just so you understand the difference (I got myself a B in GCSE Lit I am really proud of it) this is a personal remark, my remark was a little more generic

Also the point I am trying to get into your thick skull is that your opinion of the car was due to your experience of YOUR car.

I think I may have to have this as my sig, it's so funny.

And FWIW, I'm with Bear: unless you deliberately induced oversteer, then any amount of it happening is bad suspension or bad driving. Actually the latter: if you haven't taken account of the limitations of your bad suspension then it is simply bad driving.

I hope you realise I wasnt being serious, I have enough problems in real life with people understanding whether i'm being serious or not, its even more difficult on a forum.

Anyway, suspension and stuff yeah cool.

English Lit? So you understood Lord of the Flies i guess?

Flies do like to fly around **** i guess.

Given your car history thats probably the most credible thing you've said in this entire thread :p

It's ok -he's driven BMWs and MX5s

Uncalled for, what is it exactly you plan to achieve by refering to me as **** other than trying to continue an already diffused argument

Whats wrong with stating other RWD cars i've driven when talking about how crap an S14A is, it was worth mentioning, a simple comparison

What I don't understand is what on earth made you bring up getting a GCSE 'B' in english literature ?

My mentality mostly but also trying to diffuse the situation further, taking a step away from serious business on the internets

Bear has lost interest and so have I, I am entitled to my opinion and so is he

Modifying a car for capital gain is rarely possible unless you are building a competition car, and even then it's often a knife-edge thing.
Most people modify cars because they enjoy the process, making it a hobby. So it's a "mugs game" sure, if you also consider watching football, going fishing, going to the cinema, eating out etc to be a "mugs game" as well.

To keep the thread on topic, I quite likes the 200SX S14a we used to have.

I dont think I will ever understand why people bleat on about how you 'wont get the money back' and it 'wont increase its value' when people discuss making modifications to a car.

Do they shout the same thing when somebody says they are going to buy a television or a home cinema system or gym membership or a new set of golf clubs?

The difference is that no-one thinks that TVs or golf clubs will appreciate in value if you tart them up a bit, but this country is full of people who think that if you spend £5k on mods on a £5k car said car is now worth £10k. Reminding those people that a £5k car with £5k of mods will be worth £5k if you are lucky is therefore a public service.

Because people generally like to pooh pooh other peoples hobbies/interests if they themselves arent into it. You can see it most clearly in the watches threads in GD where people saying they think expensive watches are a waste of money when they have overclocked PCs in their sigs.

Im with you though, so long as you can afford it then I dont see any problem with spending money on your interests.

I dont think that is generally the case. I think most people that modify their car does so for what what ever reason (performance, looks etc) but in the first instance it isnt so their car appreciates in price.

They may not want to lose the money they put into their car but thats life.

I'm also sure it isn't the reason, but people who have spent large amounts on their pride and joy seem to lose all reason if they are forced to sell it. Some do have a realistic attitude, but there are still many who think mods add value.
