Modding the Antec Skeleton

"I fear thou dost protest too much"
Look it up, Romeo and Juliet...

I don't need to look it up. I come from a generation when we had to learn vast tracts of Shakespeare by heart and hence this cometh to mind;

"And since you know you cannot see yourself,
so well as by reflection, I, your glass,
will modestly discover to yourself,
that of yourself which you yet know not of"

- YOU'RE WRONG!;)

It's a piece of plastic junk that neither looks good nor works well as a benching tool. In short it's an expensive, pointless, poorly made, excuse for a computer case.

You do realise that not everybody in the world has the same taste as you, right?

You might not like it, but there are clearly plenty who do. I quite like it myself actually :)

Ok Guys, thanks for pointing out that we have no taste. I shall bin it immediatly and rush out to buy a black rectangular box with fans in the back.

Now if we're all done fighting in the play ground why don't we get back to the original idea of this thread. Modding the Antec Skeleton.

Sorry - I'm not stopping anyone else having or enjoying an Antec Skeleton if that's what they want. I've been on record from day 1 that I believed it was a poor piece of kit, lots of 'design' and very little function. Like most Antec stuff really.

I only posted originally because I was interested in why anyone would buy this over the cheaper (and, in my opinion, better) Banchetto.

When you post, you get subscribed and just kept getting these posts through. And if someone asks why I don't like it, then surely I have the right to answer?

The Shakespeare thing was naughty, and I apologise. I appreciate that not everyone is 42 and went school at a time when the quite literally beat Shakespeare into you so didn't forget it. And at least G-dubs had the good taste to quote his reference.

@G-Dubs - if you like it - that's fine. I don't and I won't post in your thread anymore unless I have something positive to say. I'm sorry if I caused you any offence or upset, or derailed your thread. You obviously love the Skeleton even if it's ugly and useless, and my wife says she can relate to that.;)

Thanks WJA96, a mature attitude and well respected. 42, damn and I thought I was old at 38. Same era I guess, probably same texts!! I've been building things in cans for years and still will, i just like that this is a bit of a change from the normal, a bit of a challenge. I like that it looks unusual, I like that having spent years on cans I now have to completely change the way I do things, It's like starting again from scratch, learning new ways and methods. Just thank the Gods I haven't got to learn Much Ado, the return of the native or R&J again all over. Oh and Macbeth (Actually quite liked that one)

Happy modding WJA96

Managed to get hold of that 1 way mirror acrylic a few weeks ago and fianlly got round to doing something with it. For those who haven't seen this stuff it works kinda like the stuff you see on the police dramas where they've got people standing behind, and looking through, what looks like a mirror from the other side. How it works in the PC case is that when you have the inside of the case illuminated it's transparent, like a normal sheet of perspex, but when you turn the lights off it becomes a mirroe. It was kinda hard to show how effective it is with my rather crappy camera phone, and I think it will look better when I have a bit more actual light in the lower compartment cos at present all I have is UV tubes, so the only light is that reflected off the UV reactive braidings etc which isnt really much at all. Any way a few photos.
Final note, not really used acrylic before, god is it hard to cut without splintering!!!! Had to take hacksaw blade out of hack saw in the end. I've added a few comments for each picture. I've not included all the how to stuff but if anyone wants to know I'm happy to share (not that i'm an expert)

before adding panel

panel without mesh cover, you can see reflection of G9 grip and reflection of monitor, but just make out cables in case.

internal UVs turned off now
Image175.jpg

UVs on but room lights off
Image177.jpg

internal light on and mesh in place, you can also see relection of me (sorry) taking photo
Image172.jpg

another with the lights out, you can see the cables where there is illumination, but also the reflection of the SR71 wallpaper in the area where the HDDs sit and hence this portion of the panel becomes reflective as there is no light behind it

clever stuff that, you going to put some in the arch? should think it would work good in a regular windowed case too yeah?
Welcome back Bluntside
thought about it, and may have a go just from the point of view of the technical challenge although I have to be honest in that I bow to your abilities with the mesh (still like to see the "how to" pics). To be honest i'm forever sticking my hand through the arch to cop a feel of my Northbridge and RAM temps (a good feel beats a probe any day) so windowing in would be restrictive for me. Still I have to agree I think it would look good. Just had an idea, kinda like reverse modding I could fill every area with the stuff so instead of getting a normal case and cutting holes in it you get a skeleton case and fill in the holes. hey I might even need to add fans!!!

I think that acrylic is a fantastic idea, never seen it before. Does it work convincingly? As in completely opaque when internal lighting is off?

I can't help feeling that making most of a case out of that would work very well

i'd never used it before either but thought i'd give it a go cos i fancied something a bit dif. i think its very convincing, although It's not so much opaque when the lights are off inside the case so much as totally reflective (I suppose relectoion of light is a form of opacity) An entire case made out of it would be very cool but would be a hell of an undertaking, if only because of the need for beautiful acrylic joints due to the transparent nature of the material when illuminated. I found it taxing enough just cutting the stuff. Oh and it's not cheap, £25 for a sheet 30cm by 50cm. If you see a case made out of the stuff do please post a link here.

G-Dubs, if you select a specific colour on your big boy fan does it remember that colour selection when you turn your pc off and back on again? Mine doesn't and I queried this with Antec who said I needed a new fan. Received said replacement fan today but my colour choice is still not remembered.

If it's not designed to remember it I'm wondering why bother putting a selector on it but if it is then perhaps I've been unlucky and got another duff one.

my fan does not remember what setting it was last on when it's turned off then on again, I have to cycle through till I get what I want. It does have blue LEDs. Sequence is Blue, green, red, Blue and and green, blue and red, Green and red, blue green red and then off. Although in scrolling through just now i've noticed that the red doesn't come on any more in the last two colour combinations before it goes off.
AVRC did it cost you anything to return the fan or was it covered under warrenty? Could you tell me who you rang and how did you sort it?
