Monaco Grand Prix 2011, Monte-Carlo - Race 6/19

No, but it might allow the guy who is 1 second behind to move to being 0.5 seconds behind, and have a better chance elsewhere.

DRS does not work like that.

As soon as DRS closes, they regain the drag and if they can't follow due to dirty air will fall back to those limits within seconds. DRS does not and cannot allow a car to follow closer for any other parts of the lap.

Also due to double diffuser ban, the following distance is now around 0.5-0.6 seconds anyway as seen at every race track so far.

I didn't mean it will allow them to follow closer, but just that they will be able to get closer. 1 second is quite a long way. If the limit is around 0.5 seconds to follow them, then it will get them to that 0.5 second limit.

But no, it wont generate overtakes every lap. But it will mean that the guy behind will be faster in one part of the track, and should therefore have a faster overall lap time. So at the least people should stay close.

It was just the tunnel they banned. Not DRS outright

Didn't realise that, I thought it was the whole track. Still, it is going to do absolutely nothing on that straight - the most it can do is negate the gap produced by following in another car's wake - which in Monaco will achieve nothing.

The thing is, does the slipstream gained from DRS actually improve your early acceleration enough to really work anywhere on Monaco?

So far it's been on long straights where it's more of an increase in top speed that gives the pass. There's not really anywhere in Monaco where you hit top speed for it to be really beneficial, I'd have thought. Unfortunately.

Yeah, but you have to remember Monaco is a max downforce track. The rear wing is a massive barn door. Opening it up could make massive differences in rear drag.

Looks like Jake Humphrey and Mark Webber have been reminiscing last year's success!

In my link ^ you'll see that they're bringing the red and yellow softs.

To give a bit of insight.. The yellow has been the soft option for the last 4 races, so the two compounds are sequential in the tyre scale (no 1 compound difference).

With the red expected to last less than 10 laps this could be epic.

The tyre difference was 2 seconds per lap in Spain, but surely it will be less in Monaco with fewer high speed corners.

I'm open-minded about the DRS location. I think the tunnel location may have caused accidents which would have been difficult to clear, however to counter that argument there have been far fewer accidents in 2011.

What I can see are some misjudgements going into turn 1 on late braking, the corner being cut and the pass happening in error. The pass will have to be yielded, but there still could be advantage gain by being closer coming up to the tunnel.

There are no high speed corners really at Monaco, so I cant see there being much difference between the Super Softs and the Softs in terms of time.

So you would rather we loose this crown jewel event and instead go to another Tilke Drone in a far off country where nobody is interested in F1?

In fairness, Monaco is a semi-boring track from the perspective of spectators. Essentially, pole position is the defining factor on a track with precious little chances to overtake. However, personally it is one of my favourite events in the F1 calendar.

That being said, we're never likely to see the aneurysm-inducing excitement of 1984 (Ayrton & Toleman in the ****ing wet) at Monaco ever again.

OK so stupid question time......
why do they run the first free practice and second practice on a Thursday at Monaco instead of on the normal friday..?
