Monaco Grand Prix 2012, Monte Carlo - Race 6/20

i find monaco boring because the track is so narrow and overtaking is almost impossible.

i dont mind if theres not a lot of overtaking aslong as theres room for it to happen, i dont care about the glamour of monaco it means nothing to me.

Pretty much my sentiments. This event is too much about the environment rather than the grand prix.

I love the place and the track, just because it is so confined - and there isnt another track anything like it, and there never will be again

Whilst it is difficult to overtake at Monaco there was loads of overtaking attempts last year.

On most laps you see attempts at the hairpin and the chicane coming out the tunnel.

The more overtaking there is the less value attached to each overtake.

If you think in terms of football, a 2-1 match can be infinitely more exciting than a 10-1 match.

Monaco had 16 overtakes last year. Most of these were 'real' non drs overtakes. Those who watch the sport for the overtaking (and i'm not knocking you), do you prefer Valencia? That had more overtakes than Monaco.

Turkey should be your favourite track with 85 overtakes in 2011.

Are you saying the FA Cup Final would be the same if it was held on a playing field?

It is.

Besides, the argument is that the track hinders the enjoyment. If the FA Cup Final was held at a stadium that was too narrow and hindered the game, then it would be the same.

A football pitch is a football pitch so you can't really compare.

The only reason Monaco is still used is because of the off the track features. If a new track had Monaco's similar design, it would get shot to bits by critics. Even other street tracks like Valencia allow overtaking en masse. Monaco is just so anti-racing, I hate it so much.

Agreed.

But as usual there are people who complain. We have modern tracks with massive run offs where the driver could make a cup of tea and discuss the weather before hitting anything, and they complain its boring and not challenging enough. Yet we then come to Monaco where the drivers need to be on it 110% as there is zero run off, and they complain its boring and processional

Personally, I love it, as I appreciate the skill involved in racing around it.

Agreed, I love Monaco because of the skill involved, because of the attention the drivers need to have every minute of the race. One of my favorite tracks of the F1 calendar.

Another track like Monaco will never be built again, which is another reason why we should keep it.

Unless you want a season of Tilke Drones in countries where nobody watches F1?

Variety is the spice of life, and all that.

Yeah but not as exciting as a 10-9 where the lead keeps changing ;)

I understand the concentration thing but the last Monaco that sticks in my mind is the one panis one, so for me it barely registers. The qualifying is my fav bit. Watching a faster car weave behind for 50 laps does little for me because it doesn't take much race craft to keep them behind.

I do understand why it stays though and that the track is marmite. :)

Might as well watch basketball with a score like that. How anyone can get excited by massive scores, massive amounts of overtakes etc.. defies me. To me that would be more like an american sport. The more points, goals, overtakes there are, the less each one is worth. Some people like that sort of thing, but it's not for me, and I play a high scoring sport.

Interesting that for everyone who complains about the track, some more so than others, they still watch the race out of love of the sport. If TV ratings (thus advertising) isn't effected no matter where they race, then FOM will continue to race there.

With that in mind, could we organise a mass switch off for the Valencia circuit? Well for those who have ratings boxes anyway.

Wait... So now I'm a casual viewer of F1? O...k......

I wouldn't be at all bothered if Monaco vanished from the F1 circuit. Along with Singapore, Valencia, Bahrain, Silverstone, Abu Dhabi....

Means I can't :(, not that I could watch it on Friday either. But at least if it's on Friday I could avoid results until I got home and watched it.
