Monaco Grand Prix 2015, Monte Carlo - Race 6/19

Monaco is definitely one for the purists who can appreciate the dancing they do with the throttle and brakes, using them to turn as much as the wheel, brushing up against the barriers. It's less evident with these cars as it was in the 90s and earlier, but still.

It's living off it's history. These drivers are all driving comfortably with in their limits now, pretty much never on the ragged edge.
I would appreciate the kind of spectacle you mention, but that is not modern F1.

Verstappen making a mistake doesn't make him any less deserving of a penalty. He still hurt someone elses race.

I don't disagree, but I don't see why Massa needs to pipe up on the matter.

As much as Lewis got screwed over by the team I couldn't help but laugh when he pulled up to stare out into the ocean and then smacked into his 3rd place sign :D

I wonder if there was a radio conversation going on between him and the pit wall that we havent yet heard? Either that or he was just taking the time to calm himself down as I expect he was proper raging.

Must have been really hard for Lewis to take, I mean he was in a car that was probably 5s faster on those fresh supersofts but stupid track means you can't do anything about it. If it had been somewhere like Spa he would have breezed past like it aint no thang.

I suspect he was spitting feathers on the victory lap and was trying to make sense of it.

Either that or he was contemplating "doing a Senna" and going home :p

That throws a rather interesting slant on the teams view of Rosberg.

They pitted due to concern that Ferrari would pit and beat them... But they only pitted Hamilton. There doesn't seem to have even been a discussion about Rosberg. So had Ferrari pitted and they not screwed up on their timings they would have basically thrown Rosberg under the bus in order to save Hamilton's win.

As I said earlier, perhaps they were hedging their bets. They thought Hamilton had nothing to lose by pitting, going the other way with Rosberg, who was obviously much closer to Vettel.

I don't know, I'm just throwing some theories out there. They clearly had a good reason to pit Hamilton, but whatever it was, they misjudged the time and that's obviously the issue no matter what the reason was. Rosberg had no such "luxury".

Anyway, clearly the thing last year of the two drivers must follow the same basic strategy (after Bahrain last year) has gone out of the window this year as they've split strategies a couple of times this season already.

That's what I originally thought, this race I think means the most to him as it's renowned for being a driver's circuit and Senna left a legacy.

I genuinely think Hamilton was considering emulating Senna by parking it in the same place Senna did and locking himself away for 2 days.

I properly thought he would do an Ayrton and get out and go home, same spot pretty much wasn't it?

No doubt there is a regulation which means he would have been disqualified for failing to get the car home under it's own steam though. Team probably reminded him of that ;)

Don't forget Ham had a "slow" 4.0 second stop, so had he had a routine ~3.0s stop he might have snuck ahead of Vet at the least.

All we need is his engine / gearbox to blow up in Canada to send him in to meltdown.

What the hell is this virtual safety car all about, do the drivers have a PS Vita OLED type screen on their steering wheels where they just follow a virtual car Gran Turismo style?

:p

I think the Hamilton thing has been debated enough. I'd like to hear others thoughts on the Grosjean vs Verstappen incident. Has the telemetry data been looked at yet? I'd like to know whether Grosjean lifted earlier than previous laps. He doesn't have the best record for incidents and I feel it wasn't as black and white as the penalty for Verstappen makes out.

He braked later on the incident lap than the previous, but his braking point was earlier than Verstappen (obviously, since they hit) due to Verstappen having much more stopping power with the fresh tyres.

Not going to do a full write-up now, but if people are interested in how the experience went, what we got up to, who we met, where we went and what we saw I'll post something up. It was a truly surreal experience considering I've dreamt of going to the race and never thought I'd do it in such a fashion as we did.

please do post, its a trip i would like to do myself, and would love to read about your experience also rough cost if you had such a thing...

I can't see why Vers got such a huge penalty for that, it was a racing incident, Grosjean seemed to slam on the brake really early for the corner.

Now we have Massa, questioning whether Vers should have got a F1 car, this is the same Massa that did the exact same thing slamming into the rear of another car last season.

One crash at Monaco and all of a sudden he isn't good enough? lol Massa needs to wind his neck in.

He had the balls to go for the move and got caught out by a suspect bit of braking by Grosjean It happens, has happened to loads of drivers. I'd of put it down to racing incident myself.

I'd like to see the data as Brundle pointed out that both Grosjeans position and braking seemed to differ from his previous laps.

I think Max is getting an unfair amount of greif for this. He has spent the whole season so far being far and away the bravest with his overtaking. I'd hate to see him tone it down because some useless old has beens (I'm looking at you Massa) complain he's dangerous.

Yes, they use this technology during qualifying too, so it's not much of a step forward. During a hot lap, they can project a time trial ghost of the current pole lap.
