Monitor Calibration - Try before you buy!

After just purchasing a new monitor I would absolutely love if I could get added to the bottom of the list, wonderlander - top guy for initiating this.

Many thanks for letting me borrow this. It was surprising to see how far out the colours were on my monitors seeing the one calibrated compared to the other non calibrated one (same model)!

This reminds me of that thing they use to do with books? after reading it they left it on the bench for the next person to read.

Would be interested to know, do those who have already had it find that it has made a big difference?

Old post but... I thought it did. I always had problems with artifacts getting exposed in Photoshop against certain shades of black until it was saved as png and became quite prominent on other screens. But there's lots of other things that pops on screen now though, I'm now so accustomed to it that it just feels normal. Certain metallic textures really jumped off the screen, all the speckles and pits like as if it was reflecting. Amongst other things.

I don't know what difference it is between Spyder 2 and Spyder 4. I had always skimped on these and relied on the software calibrators. No more.

That was what bugged me the most with my 2405. It had a slight yellow cast. Steam looked like a light brown. The Apple display had a slight pink cast affecting the greys. Now all 4 displays look the same. Perfectly neutral as if you bought it the first day.

Thanks for that, really looking forward to my turn now :p

FAQ:

  • Does this work with on MACs? - Yes according to the box but I'm not a MAC man so am not sure what versions it dows work with

I was looking around... as I wasn't in the mood to shift through 16 pages to see. :)

Hi, I've had this product for three years now and it's served me well. However, it uses PowerPC/Rosetta code for the calibration software, which has been dropped in OS X Lion. I asked Datacolor about it and the said this was a "7 year old product that was designed before new displays like wide gamut and glossy screens came out" and has been "replace by the Spyder3". They may or may not make a solution for Lion but they said it was not easy and they're looking if they can still do it. Will it happen? I don't know.

For now however, at least at the moment this review was made, the Spyder 2 WILL NOT WORK with OS X Lion. Caveat emptor.

Spyder2express 2.3 Installer for Macintosh
Requirements: Spyder2express sensor

Operating System Support
Mac OS X: 10.4 (Tiger), 10.5 (Leopard), 10.6 (SnowLeopard)

Target White Point is 6500K instead of Native.

Rosetta
Installation on Mac OS X 10.6 (SnowLeopard) requires Rosetta to be installed. The installed application (Spyder2Express) is is PowerPC-only, therefore Rosetta is required to run it. Rosetta is an optional install on 10.6 (SnowLeopard). This is not an issue for 10.4 (Tiger) and 10.5 (Leopard) systems where Rosetta is automatically installed. OSX 10.7 (Lion) does not support Rosetta, therefore Spyder2 applications will not run under 10.7.
