Monzo/Starling Banking/Revolut

People still need telling, you never ever give details or follow instructions from someone who has called you claiming to be from a bank or financial institution.
revolut were also responsible - with their genz appealing, selfie check ;
saying that I haven't needed to telephone lloyds recently with their voice id crap, either.

thought there was a weird parallel between revolut and the new tesla report findings
there's a point where you give people enough rope to hang themselves with,

According to the report by NHTSA, Tesla’s design is flawed and has “led to foreseeable misuse and avoidable crashes.”
Explaining the issues with the car, the report said it has a weak driver engagement system which clashes with the autopilot feature’s permissive operating capabilities, causing a critical safety gap.

Furthermore, the name “autopilot” is misleading for some drivers. It may lead them to think the feature has greater auto-driving capabilities than it actually does.

Just had a right BS exchange with PayPal.

I bought a TV ~1300 on 3 years 0%
I then bought a shower for ~£480 on 3 months 0%.

I then decided a £480 shower was dumb AF so cancelled it. PayPal have then credited the £480 against the £1300. I hadn't paid much attention as the reduced term/payment on the TV didn't bother me (I think it was £48/mo vs. £26). I thought I'd query it though yesterday, as when I clicked it only showed ~£800 outstanding.

Turns out they applied the £480 refund to the £1300 deal, and the £480 for the shower I don't even have, is due 22/05. WTF?

I said fix it and they said "they'll try", with no ETA.

Love to see PayPal hasn't changed a bit since the early noughties!

Yeah this happens quite a lot if you use any of their 0% stuff and then end up getting a refund. You're never quite sure which one it's going to credit but as I only tend to use the 4 month one I've never been bothered enough to query it

Yeah I can appreciate it being "tricky" across multiple 3 month'ers but surely a 36 month special needs to be ring fenced?

There's no reason for it to be tricky at all, they've got the transaction ID they know which one has been refunded so it should only be applied to the one related to that transaction ID...but PayPal.

Looks like Chase is anticipating a BoE rate reduction at the next meeting. It has dropped the 1% interest rate on its current account to 0%.

Obviously no-one would be keeping savings in there, but it means those using for their bills money aren't going be earning anything.

Headed to Japan later in the year and although the yen make get weaker wouldn’t bet against GBP doing worse

Is revolut an option for buying Yen and holding at current rate until then and spending there? Any other (better) options?

Seems silly not to at least hedge some of our hotel spending on current rates

Yeah revolut or Wise worth a go.

Fair. A quick complaint sorted it, altho any 'digital' nature of the transaction is now gone. It's just a journal of an amount. No love lost but shady tactics.

cheers

Daft question but when using the revolut card out there it’s pretty much just like a GBP debit card but I have JPY on it?

If you hold both JPY and GBP in revolut it defaults to use charging currency or you’d have separate cards?

It picks local currency. My friend reckons it auto exchanges any other currency if you run out of local but I've never let it get to that.

If you have JPY it will use that. If you don't have JPY but do have GBP then it will convert it for you (fees apply for conversion at weekends).

Really tempted to switch my main banking stuff from Monzo to Chase. I don't like the Monzo app since the revamp, I do my 'beer' or non-Amex spending with Chase due to the cashback, the savings interest is higher, the transfer interests are higher etc. I think the only thing I would miss out on is splitting card transactions (which I never do) and getting paid a day early.

Can you qualify for RBS premium? 10 quid a month and rewards.

I do but I don't really see what it gets me that makes it worth it?
It pays you a tenner a month and it's pretty reliable for day to day banking. The rewards only need to be useful once or twice to outdo Chase.

I've got it as my main current account to earn the tenner for doing nothing. Then transfer beer money to Monzo for their rewards (appreciate this is higher tier finance autism), and use Barclaycard credit for the 1% cashback instead of chase.

Doing exactly this with wise and set it to trigger when it hits 200.

I also bought some cash last month, which in hindsight I shouldn’t have!

Hmm. It's £2 a month though right, and £9 back for two direct debits. Not sure what the 'Rewards' £1 is. Seems a bit of hassle to open up yet another bank account for £7 a month if I don't use the Rewards.

I use Amex wherever it's accepted for Avios, when it's not I use the Chase debit card for the 1% cashback which I pretty much max each month.
