More Meat please! (Thread about good steak)

Would a foil wrap keep it from getting cold for 10 mins? Don't really like eating food that should be warm cold.

I usually wrap it and leave it in a warm place such as the oven on the lowest setting with the door slightly open just to keep it warm but not too hot

I've noticed round my parts that asda of all the supermarket meats seem to be getting the best tasting stuff in. Normally I never go near the place because it's like a ***** convention but the standard of their meat compared to tesco and sainsbury near me is much better.

All this talk of strong cheese sauces is making me cry :( Leave the meat alone, a bearnaise sauce at the very most

Speaking of bearnaise, it's not something sold in any UK supermarkets, is it?

Has to be imported or made form scratch?

I guess I'm a bit of snob when it comes to shopping - I just associate Asda with cheap and nasty - I'm sure I'm probably wrong, but I just can't shake that feeling. :o

it's infurating, I buy fresh stuff and Asda's not bad for that.
But for the love of God, put things where I can find it.
rice, pasta and over wheats spread over 6 isles.
Spices, curry pastes, Chinese, etc etc spread over another 8 isles.
I've decided today that I won't be going back to asda, it just takes far to long to find anything remotely specialised.
Think I'll be going back to Sainsburys.

And stupid hovis yeast, my Nan dough hasn't risen :(.

All this talk of steak made me decide on where I should take my fiancé to eat when we go to Cape Town for 2 weeks mid-April.

I remembered a few places, and found a restaurant website, and with the current exchange rates, we'll be eating VERY well.

As an example:

300g fillet in one of the best places you can eat steak £6 (£20.50 in Gaucho in London)

1kg of West Coast lobster in restaurant £29 (Buy 1kg fresh from a shop in the UK and it's £27, so I shudder to think how much 1kg would cost in a London restaurant)

200g premium hamburger (sorta like Gourmet Burger Kitchen) £3.50 (£6ish in London)

Only 2 weeks til I fly!!!!

My uncle just brought a cut of beef back from the Rig he works on. It's about the size of my leg. I'll try and get a picture. It's straight from Argentina, or Brazil. 'Bloody' massive.

Ahh Cape Town is quality- was 12 ZAR to the £ when I was there... Didn't sample the steak but AVOID Cape Town Fish market- it's a right tourist trap!

I just ate, roast salmon and steamed vegetables. As for steak, I've never tried it :0. I never aquired the taste and composition for red meat. Chicken and fish 4tw!!

So where do you shop ?

Since you ask... For general shopping, Waitrose, though for meats I try to go to the butchers at least once a week, though the counter at Waitrose is pretty decent for a supermarket IMO - and I'm a food snob.

Convenience shopping I go to Sainsbury's - and again their counters aren't too bad sometimes, but that's usually for convenience emergency purchases, as it takes about 25mins to go to Waitrose and 5 mins to go to Sainsbury's.

The butcher is walking distance but there's often a queue so you have to time it right ;)

I'm sure Asda is better than I give it credit for, it just appears cheap and nasty to me - however if you all tell me the quality is high then I shall believe you - however I'd be comparing it to the butcher's and what I can get at Waitrose. :)

BTW Roquefort > Stilton in the steak sauce stakes.

Roquefort > Stilton full stop. I like a nice bit of Stilton but Roquefort is so much tastier.

I agree with TheDean though. Aberdeen Angus (if that's what it is) is one of the tastiest cows in the world and doesn't need strong flavours to help it.

De-glaze the pan with a half a glass of Highland malt, reduce by half, spoonful of creme fraiche - job's a good-un.

Asparagus is excellent with steak, I rarely have steak without it.

Roquefort is indeed fort. I'm not a fan of fetid cheese sauces as I find them overpowering. But then again some might find the amount of garlic I use equally so :D

+1 asparagus.
