The only thing - at a stretch, is as Streeteh mentioned which is the side scrollers making a come back in the forms of things like Braid, Trine and Shadow Complex.
I'd say Portal has the potential to be influential but as of yet we haven't seen anything similar to it. It's the only game I can think of that has a first person setup but does not allow you the use of any weapons. I've certainly never played anything like it before so it can't be classed as an evolution of an earlier game, unless such a game existed years ago?
Anyone that mentions COD 4 should take themselves outside and martydom themselves. It maybe a fantastic game to play online but neither the single player or the multiplayer brought anything new to the genre or generation.
The perk system was robbed from Star Wars battlefront which I'd still rather play if they made one for this gen. COD 4 in a star wars skin
Influential doesn't mean originality. Ever since COD4 came out, other games have had some sort of perk system. Perks is the new coined phrase for weapon upgrades and features in an fps game.
Rockband, redefined what music games should be.
Rockband, redefined what music games should be.
It's made the genre more popular and mainstream today, but to be honest, this was kind of done before with Konami's Drummania and Guitar Freaks arcade games which were able to be linked up.
I could kind of consider Bioshock and Oblivion as influential, they're nothing entirely new in themselves but they certainly pushed the boundaries upon their release
What? How can it be influential if it's been ripped straight from another game.
Bioshock didn't push any boundaries. It was a complete step backwards from System Shock 2.
Huh? What other fps this gen has done what COD4 has done online? It basically started the whole perk system craze in games.
If something is second in line to do something then it's not influential, it's influenced.
