most influential games this generation?

I could kind of consider Bioshock and Oblivion as influential, they're nothing entirely new in themselves but they certainly pushed the boundaries upon their release

the only influential game i can think of from the three next gen consoles is 'wii sports' sadly
this game has convinced non gamers to buy a wii and forced sony and microsoft to try and imitate its control system
i do like cod4 but its not exactly groundbreaking, i mean how much different is it than say counter strike source?
i enjoyed uncharted loads but its not a million miles away from tomb raider
games like braid and portal added something for me in that they stuck out in their genre but they didnt really influence anything new

I'd say Portal has the potential to be influential but as of yet we haven't seen anything similar to it. It's the only game I can think of that has a first person setup but does not allow you the use of any weapons. I've certainly never played anything like it before so it can't be classed as an evolution of an earlier game, unless such a game existed years ago?

Because its not a fps. You're just a test subject testing out a new piece of equipment.

Maybe it's a FPP then? First Person Puzzler? :p

Hmm, barring that then I can't think of anything that has brought something I've never seen in a game before, in one form or another.

Anyone that mentions COD 4 should take themselves outside and martydom themselves. It maybe a fantastic game to play online but neither the single player or the multiplayer brought anything new to the genre or generation.

The perk system was robbed from Star Wars battlefront which I'd still rather play if they made one for this gen. COD 4 in a star wars skin ;)

Rockband, redefined what music games should be.

Fifa 09 they actually bother to build a new gen engine for their games.

Avatar for showing that no matter how crap a game is, if you can grab 1000 achievement points in 2 minutes it will be a hard game to get hold of and become the most rented or resold game in history ;)

Influential doesn't mean originality. Ever since COD4 came out, other games have had some sort of perk system. Perks is the new coined phrase for weapon upgrades and features in an fps game.

What? How can it be influential if it's been ripped straight from another game. I often see COD4 getting credit for a perk system that was already on another game. I don't think 'perk' is a coined phrase for weapons upgrades in FPS games. I've never heard anyone else call upgrades when playing any other game a perk except in cod4 WaW

Just the same as you mentioned cover system for glitches of war. I'm pretty sure Rainbow six had a cover system before that and GRAW as well. Of the 3 games Gears was the most frustrating as well.

It's made the genre more popular and mainstream today, but to be honest, this was kind of done before with Konami's Drummania and Guitar Freaks arcade games which were able to be linked up.

For home use? I must admit I'd never heard of those games before and had to youtube the videos to find anything on them. I can see them being played in an arcade solo. The drums look hard as well :)

Bioshock didn't push any boundaries. It was a complete step backwards from System Shock 2.
