Just interested in your opinions on this one.

Just listening to Queens - Barcelona and a thought struck me. As a singer does anyone else come near Freddie Mercury and on a larger picture Queen when it comes to crossing so many different styles of music succesfully?

Thoughts?

Hopefully the answers will give me new areas to look into music wise.

I guess we are doing popular music otherwise my vote is going on Pavarotti or someone. :p

Its a hard one, I am stuck between Sufjan Stevens, Jonsi and Wayne Coyne as my favourites. But as to talented... god knows.

depends how you'd define "most talented" really, doesnt it? i'm sure we're not all qualified to comment on "how much" talent someone has, if there's even a measurment for such a thing, and as such it's unrealistic to try and quantify it. i'd also say that genre-spanning doesn't really have a lot to do with it, as genre is more of a cultural interpretation, there's not really much of a prerequesite for measured talent there; that'd be more of a songwriting consideration.

having said that, as far as my personal preference goes (bearing in mind i haven't based this any showmanship/songwriting ability) I'd say Jeff Buckley.

Oooo good call.

Might as well ask 'who is the best band' or 'what is the best genre of music'. Such questions have almost lead to full-scale war in the past! At the end of the day, it is simply a matter of taste. Some will say Kirt Cobain had a better voice than Freddie, and how can you argue it to them? Could I convince everyone that Joe Satriani is a better guitarist than The Edge? It is simply personal taste, and for your own sakes, leave it at that!

My personal favourite is (or was?) Freddie Mercury.
Have to agree with you there. I once saw some programme about the Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert and someone said that the singers were having to stop a couple of notes lower than Freddie when singing one of Queen's songs.

And these were all pretty famous, world renowned singers who weren't able to go as high as Freddie's voice could.

Robbie Williams.

His voice is good, but as an entertainer right now there's no-one close to him.
