MOT fail thread

Bit of a clue to how well maintained the car was..
ABS, TC & SRS lights on, I mean why even bring it in with those lights on?

But the best bit..

The inner edge of that tyre was about 3mm higher than the rest (bulged), and it must have been noticeable when driving, although it's an Avon which tend to crack/split after a couple of years.

Were they surprised when it failed? :p

Loads of ghost MOT's still being advertised in and around Birmingham, Will explain the amount of death traps I see driving around.

Hello, I was looking at the MOT record of a 2019 Golf that I might buy, the MOT record is good apart from

Repair immediately (major defects):
  • Nearside Headlamp aim too high (4.1.2 (a))
  • Offside Headlamp aim too high (4.1.2 (a))
Why would this happen on a car with LED lights? Has it had a light front-end accident?

A number of issues can affect headlight calibration, e.g. hitting a pothole, mechanical wear. It is not necessarily an accident, but it could be.

There is a service called Car Vertical which may show you more about the car.

Can you talk us through your logic of why you're surprised it would happen to a car with LED lights, over say a car with old style Halogen ones?

Do a history check from Total Car Check or VCheck, their bundles are pretty reasonable compared to Car Vertical. Have used both myself to check accident history etc.

This was recorded in Jan 2023, its first MOT, all the others are OK

If it was the first MOT the lights were probably never correctly set at the PDI and it spent three years driving around blinding everyone.

Saw that a lot in Skoda owner's groups - "these LED lights are rubbish, everyone keeps flashing me" and then they post a photo of their beam pattern and it's nearly lighting up their neighbours upstairs windows

Yup, I think the first MOT for my previous car had this. I'd owned it since nearly new (300 miles), never touched the HID headlights, but the tester said they were technically too high, and that he saw it quite often on cars in for their first check. Luckily he was kind enough to just adjust them for me rather than list it as a fail.
