Interesting news coming out of Venezuela: http://www.reuters.com/article/2013/10/18/us-venezuela-currency-idUSBRE99H03220131018

That kind of money sounds like it would be tied to F1 and thus Maldonado...

In an interview published on Thursday by local newspaper Ultimas Noticias, Sports Minister Alejandra Benitez said she discovered from a state bank that her signature had been forged on more than 60 fraudulent requests for dollars.

The fraudulent documents, she said, almost all involved motorsports and had initially escaped close scrutiny because of the high costs involved in competing.

"There was just one racer who, in a year and half, was approved for $66 million," Benitez told the paper. "Just two of these drivers were claiming in a year what it costs us to take the whole team of more than 600 athletes (to an event)."

It is a valid question, did the addition of massive tarmac run-offs etc cause the newer drivers to take more risks? The run-offs also allow drivers to pass each other outside of the track boundary. Having said that, there are still a few venues on the calendar (like Monaco) that punish mistakes and rough driving with a DNF.

It annoys the hell out of me when F1 drivers make ridiculous overtaking attempts knowing that when it all goes wrong they can just leave the track, accelerate on the run off/cut the chicane and rejoin on the back of the car they tried to overtake gearbox with nothing lost. Back in the day a move like that would be considered a rookie error and would cost several seconds and probably places, nowadays even experienced drivers like Alonso do it because they know there is absolutely nothing to lose and everything to gain.

Agreed, I would love to see, grass strip and the super grippy tarmac stuff, used in combination.

Nothing beats the thrill of crashes though and circuits, like Monaco, Canada etc .

Saw this posted on the topgear facebook earlier:
Retro Liveries

Whilst I've seen a lot of these before, like the McLaren and Williams ones.

The Williams one looks far better than it did in the 90s, and the 90s wasn't an ugly duckling.

The Marlboro McLaren just looks like the MP4/11 (minus the winglets in front of the rear wheels and the barge-boards).

Toro Rosso announce their second driver for next season - Daniil Kvyat (who?)

Daniil Kvyat will drive for Toro Rosso in Formula 1 next season, in a surprise move by the Italian team.

After weeks of speculation about which of Red Bull's youngsters would be promoted as replacement for Red Bull-bound Daniel Ricciardo in 2014, the Russian GP3 and European Formula 3 frontrunner has been given the nod ahead of early favourite Antonio Felix da Costa.

Kvyat has impressed in GP3 this season, and is currently second in the standings behind Facu Regalia with only the final round in Abu Dhabi remaining.

The 19-year-old drove for Toro Rosso in the Silverstone young driver test in July and also carried out a straightline test with Red Bull last week.

Red Bull junior. Frontrunner in Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup and now GP3. I guess Da Costa's less than impressive follow-up season in FR3.5 cost him the chance.

Promising as Kvyat is, I can't help but think this is somewhat premature. Even if he secures the GP3 title, he needs seat time in a more powerful car (eg GP2) or a year out like Bottas with free practice runs. Perhaps RB think he is the Russian answer to Vettel.

Seems Kvyat's signing has triggered some comedy gold over on Twitter:

Kvyat doesn't know he's a Toro Rosso driver yet because he has to be in bed at 8.

Somewhere in the world right now, the 2017 Toro Rosso line-up is being conceived.

GP2 is considering some radical changes to become F1's feeder series again. Here's plan A: pic.twitter.com/2Gx9oDcqfW

We are getting to the point where F1 drivers will be asked about Senna and they will think of Bruno.

Good news for Sirotkin, who will not be the only F1 driver going through puberty next year.

Kvyat seems a good prospect for the future, whether he can step it up so soon though will need to be seen, we have seen before how ruthless the Red Bull program can be... Also not sure why RB feel the need to rush things, I wouldn't imagine either Vettel or Ricciardo will need to be replaced so quickly.
