Very surprised at that. I thought Felix Da Housecat was a shoe-in for that seat. He must be pretty ****** off right now.

from f1 espn site:

Antonio Felix da Costa, who had been the favourite to get the drive, took to Twitter to give his reaction.
"It hurts but it's like this, I'm happy for Daniil and that it stays in the Red Bull Family, enjoy mate."

Hmm, rather odd. He's promising, sure, but he's a GP3 driver. Thats a massive leap to make it into F1 in a midfield team. I wonder what his secret is?

"Russian Driver...."

Oh, more Russian mob money buying F1 seats :(. What a complete and utter waste of a spot and a massive kick in the teeth for anyone trying to get into F1 on merit.

F1 is screwed.

Edit: Does Kvyat meet the requirements of a Super Licence yet?

^ Yep. Also will help that Red Bull are apparently trying to increase their sales in Russia too.

They're nearly as bent as the Venezuelan government. Next thing we'll have a Chinese driver in at Marussia, sponsored by Triads.

Ma Qing Hua was signed to HRT for 2013.

Chinese nobody, but backed by piles of Chinese money. HRT's closure spared us that total embarrassment.

There are (so far) 2 drivers looking to make F1 look stupid next year, Sirotkin and Kvyat.

I'm much less cynical about the Kyvat appointment. imo it's unfair to lump him with sirotkin when his route to F1 is more like Bottas'. I have to consider what Red Bull's motivations would be, and I don't see money being their main concern given how much of it they seem to be willing to spend. On the other hand, Ricciardo is a big risk having shown only brief glimpses of excellence so far, so I'm sure that they would want a backup plan in place if Ricciardo can't prove himself within a couple of years. So I believe that they genuinely see Kyvat as their best bet for producing something special.

Kyvat deserves a chance. He's 2nd in the GP2 standings, not some utter no hoper like Ma Qing Ha. There's lots of precendent - many of the 80s/90s drivers went straight from F3 into F1. Some like Raikkonen from even lower catagories...

Thing is, Kvyat has 22 laps in an F1 car to date. Raikkonen, Alonso and Vettel had thousands of test miles (because it wasn't restricted back then). In fact it took a full week of testing for Raikkonen to be on the pace with the regular drivers in pre-season.

GP3 not GP2. About half the power of an F1 car and little aero.

True enough. Some of the biggest names in the business as well - Mansell, Senna, Prost....Can't really compare that to the current day sport though.

What this does is make a complete mockery of the so called feeder series'. In fact the worst thing a driver can do in GP2 is win the championship. It effectively bans them from the 2nd tier of motorsport and theres never any room in F1 for them.

Im actually in the bizarre situation of hoping the guys I like in GP2 lose...

How many went straight from F3 to an F1 race seat with nothing more than some demo runs?

Even the commonly referenced example of Kimi had many times more mileage under his belt than any of these young punks.

The difference between then and now is the massive cassum left behind as a result of the testing ban.

Kimi? He did a winter series in Formula Renault, followed by the main UK series the following "summer". That's say 25 races, before getting signed by Sauber. Not sure on the testing mileage however.

Late 70s/early 80s F1 was slightly different as the big teams tended to run an occaisional third car for prospects that did well in testing, eg Mansell got three events in 1980. Others like Piquet got a handful of races for midfield teams before getting snapped up.

That's the killer, IMO. Not only do we have a situation with the supposed pinnacle of motorsport where you can't properly test your car out for development purposes, but you can't even give a young 'un some mileage to train them.

Kimi did 3 tests before getting a drive.

But he is the exception, not the rule. Just like pay drivers shouldn't fill half the grid just because Schumacher did it.

F1 is the pinnacle of motorsport, and that goes for drivers too.

He was given test sessions at Mugello, Jerez and Barcelona (a total of 9 days). That was before the end of the 2000 season, I'm not sure about 2001.
