the outside of that corner isn't the racing line? bit of turf will sort that

Indeed, its just to capture major offs as they only run up to the outside edge on the final part of the corner which is out of view there.

I thought bikes required gravel? Certainly the runoff modifications at Silverstone for MotoGP involved adding gravel, not removing it.

Tarmac run offs are to give tyres grip. If a bike is going off it's usually on its side so stops better in gravel than sliding over tarmac.

With a sea of tarmac before they get to the gravel, so kind of a best of both world.

It's not to stop the bike, it's to stop the biker.

Anyone seen the video from the Sprint Car event last night? Tony Stewart gets into a crunch, bloke in other car comes out and walks towards car as it comes round again, Stewart hits him, kills the driver in an instant?

Yeah. :(

Stewart didn't have contact with the guy in the corner, apparently squeezed him on the straight a lap or two before and the rear tyre went down causing him to spin. You can hear Stewart blip the throttle as he approaches the guy as he passes under caution the lap after.

Tragic accident due to red mist or something else? I dunno.

wtf was that all about, firstly what sort of **** starts trying to run in front of racing cars like that and secondly, what kind of mentalist doesn't take avoiding action and instead appears to drive as close as he can, presumably to scare him???

Extreme muppetry on all fronts there

Edit - reading around it seems entirely possible Stewart might end up with a murder charge or similar against him for that...

That's insanely stupid of the guy to walk into the middle of the race track, let alone at night, wearing all black attire.

Reports are saying that the guy who put him into the barrier and then run him over floored the accelerator (under caution) so I assume this will get very serious? panic? attempt to scare him that went wrong? road rage?

From watching the video - he wasn't put into the barrier. The right rear tyre deflated after the cars touched wheels earlier causing him to spin off.

I could hear Tony Stewart open a short burst of throttle under the caution, as Kenai said most likely to scare the guy gesticulating in the middle of the track.

Playing the F1 game. I'm driving for Mclaren and Jenson is my team mate.
