Motorsport Off Topic Thread

I dunno, everyone thought and engine freeze would be the end of the world and it wasn't. I think I'd be happy with a chassis freeze too and only allow upgrades for safety or changes if they were deemed to be 'outside the spirit' of the rules.

I guess I'd be happy with it but allow some in season testing for drivers so they can work on getting the best out of the car and give a test driver some proper testing mileage.

Huge news.

FIA has banned radio chat about car and driver performance with immediate effect.

In order to ensure that the requirements of Article 20.1 of the F1 Sporting Regulations is respected at all times we intend to rigorously enfoce this regulation with immediate effect. Therefore no radio conversation from pit to driver may include any information that is related to the performance of the car or driver.

That's a good move imo but how are they going to enforce it properly and what penalties will there be if the teams don't comply?

Can someone put in laymans terms what this means?

What sort of messages could we hear previously that we can't now?

Telling the driver to brake later at a certain corner, or that his tyre/brakes are too hot/cold. Basically anything a driver is expected to already know to get a faster lap time.

Time splits and pit stop strategies will of course still be discussed. I'm assuming things like fuel map settings to save fuel will still be allowed.

Stupid rule, impossible to enforce and it's a team sport, I can't understand why fans are getting so annoyed with it. The technicians aren't driving the car, just telling them where they can improve their lap.

I'm sure tyre and brake (especially) temps will be allowed to be discussed as it's a potential safety issue.

I think it's more about the "drop back 2 seconds and preserve the tyres for now", "OK Lewis, it's Hammertime", "time to be made in sector 1", etc.

The hammertime one is relative to pit strategy though, which is allowed. Just basically saying rag the tyres for everything you can as you're binning them in 2 laps time.

My response regarding the ban on team radio has been filtered to be suitable for this public forum...

How utterly, utterly completely and totally retarded. Its completely unenforcable and a complete joke that the teams are allowed to gather all the data, yet can't tell the man (or woman) in charge of driving the car. Every single other motorsport in the world tries as hard as it can to get as much information to the driver as possible. This is a completely stupid rule fired from the perpetual rule production machine that is the FIA aimed at solving a problem that doesn't exist because someone thinks F1 is losing popularity as randomers who know nothing of the sport don't understand why drivers are being told how to drive faster.

F1 is in need of new regulators. The FIAs attempts to 'fix' the sport are ruining it to a level where its becomeing a parody of itself.

Whats next? "Lewis Hamilton has lost the FIA Formula 1 World Drivers Championship as he was handed a drive through penalty because his engineer told him "that was a good lap"!"?

******* stupid. Utterly retarded.

The FIA are a joke. I wish all the teams went and form their own championship.

I'm not entirely sure that's a good idea though. It sounds like one but when you think about it Bernie (sadly in some ways) has been a driving force in making F1 as popular as it is. He's very good at pushing things through, telling some people to STFU and banging heads together at moments of impasse. An 'F1' series controlled by the teams themselves would quickly develop into squabbling about rules with each team wanting different things. IMO it would be a farce.

Teams could never agree anything, but just because Bernie has done good stuff in the passed, doesn't mean he still is. Helps got old and senile and he's not good for the sport anymore. However good his deeds were in the passed. same for FIA and the crazy things they keep bringing in. Bernie and FIA need someone to bang their heads together.

Bernie is FOM, the rules are FIA. What F1 needs is a new regultor, not a new promoter or head of comercial interest.

Just look at the World Championships the FIA have tried to 'fix' in the last decade:

WRC - Pretty much dead
WTCC - Almost dead
FIA GT - Dead
Formula 2 - Dead

The ability of the FIA to successfully regulate global motorsport has to be questioned. Perhaps its time Bernie took his series to be run by someone else? IMSA maybe? or the ACO?

Bernie has huge sway, as I said they are both issues that need to be dealt with.

But nothing regulatory is Bernies decision. If the FIA are swayed in writing the rules by the rants of a crazy old bloke, then that reflects badly on the FIAs ability to govern, surely.

The FIA and FIA alone write the rules. And the rules are ****!

Yes but Bernie is still an issue, it's still his baby and he still has huge sway, money and rights talk. I don't think it would be solved by just fixing one, you need to fix both. Although fixing either however would help.

Bernie would still be there but not the FIA.

Bernie is good for F1.

Sure in isolation some of this ideas and decisions are questionable, but overall, the job he has done has been invaluable in making F1 what it is today. When you have someone with that much passion for money financially invested in something, you can be dam sure they will make it a success.

You might not like how Bernie has made F1 a success, but you can't deny that he has made it a success.

The FIA on the other hand, seem hell bent on destroying it.

Seems I guessed wrong. Charlie Whiting has just said this will be disallowed as drivers have all this information available to them on their steering wheel. So they can't say use this engine map at this time etc...

As far as penalties go, it's down to Steward's discretion but is likely to be a Sporting penalty rather than fine.
