I've just read that on the BBC site..so Alonso, who is perfectly fine and medically ok (according to McLaren) has been advised to miss the Australian GP.
Ok..right.

It's to avoid any possibility of a secondary concussion within a month of the first, I suspect Melbourne being a street circuit was also taken into account.

Still, McLaren haven't handled it too well with conflicting messages.

Happy for K-Mag to get another F1 opportunity but I do hope Alonso recovers in the meantime, it's not as if McLaren are going to finish the race at this point in the engine's life but very happy for Magnussen none-the-less.

Is it just me that thinks there's more to the Alonso crash than we're being told?

Just looks like he got concussion.

These protocols are pretty standard, it's just to mitigate the risk of a second concussion occuring which could then end up being pretty serious.

Happens in rugby a fair bit.

I thought they were being overly cautious, but then I read the opening paragraph of the wikipedia article on second impact syndrome and now I'd say it was the sensible thing to do:

wikipedia said:
Second-impact syndrome (SIS) occurs when the brain swells rapidly, and catastrophically, after a person suffers a second concussion before symptoms from an earlier one have subsided. This second blow may occur minutes, days or weeks after an initial concussion, and even the mildest grade of concussion can lead to SIS. The condition is often fatal, and almost everyone who is not killed is severely disabled.

With all that has happened to Jules in terms of head injuries I'm glad such a precaution is being made to be honest. I also doubt the full story has been made fully clear by McLaren as well.
