Motorsport Off Topic Thread

Confirmation that the German GP has been dropped from the calendar by the FIA. 19 races. :(

Can a passing mod please adjust my Australian GP Thread title? :p

In reference to the article by buxton

I was particularly gutted that they changed the tyres mid season

Autosport has finally picked up on the developments around Alonso: http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/118160

AUTOSPORT understands Alonso set off to Malaysia on Monday where he will be assessed by the FIA medical delegate and have an 'Impact' test on Thursday before being assessed by the track's medical officer.

A decision will then be taken as to whether the double world champion is passed fit to take part in the race weekend.

He'll be made to do the krypton factor as this point! :D

This is bad news for GP2 and FR3.5.

That would depend on cost and where the rich folk (Red Bull, Ferrari, McLaren and the Jonathan Palmers of the racing world) put their money.

In many ways it'll be interesting to see how it works out but I can see it just being another money hungry organisation which becomes a showcase for the rich boys.

Nothing to do with money. The new Super License rules mean that any young driver looking to join a 2nd tier series and has ambitions of making it to F1 will automatically choose F2 over GP2 or FR3.5.

F2 could be nothing more than a kart race on Blackpool Pleasure Beach and it will still be the top of any drivers list.

Anyone been to the Circuit de Catalunya? I'm going for the week (Arrive Weds night and leave Monday morning). We will be camping onsite and have reserved seats at Elf corner (Stand F). Anyone got any experience of this stand and the campsite?

I went last year, but stayed in Barcelona and had a different grandstand (L).

On Friday you can get access to almost every grandstand, so use that day to walk the circuit and try out all the views, as you are limited to just your allocated seat on Saturday and Sunday.

I think its a great circuit for spectators. The track is always below you so you get decent views, and the paths and roads around are decent.

Other than that, take a hat and/or lots of sun cream, and enjoy!

If you can get to 40 points cheaper by doing a bit more GP2 (the rule is 3 years after all) than F2, why would more entrants choose F2?

That's exactly why I fear it'll be dominated by money, with the points system they have already said it's 'worth more' than the others, so those with big backing will all choose F2 leaving less/no seats for those without as much, who will probably have to go to the other series.

"One particularly interesting aspect of this graph is how highly McLaren's Jenson Button (black line) scores throughout the race, especially relative to the Mercedes drivers. Despite struggling for outright pace, the Briton ended the race with the fourth-highest Cornering Rating, behind only Massa, Hamilton and Rosberg. Indeed, on Lap 23 he almost matches Hamilton, and is ahead of Rosberg. At this point, his lap time was 1m 35.643s - more than two seconds slower than Rosberg, who managed a 1m 32.948s.

Of course, there are several reasons Button could rank so highly in this aspect, the first being driving style. Button is known to favour carrying speed into the corners, lending itself to a higher score in this category. But even so, the cornering data from Australia suggests the MP4-30, while uncompetitive overall, is not actually surrendering too much speed in the corners relative to other drivers - which hints at it having an inherently good level of downforce.
