Motorsport Off Topic Thread

Let's be honest, we have no idea at all about what's going on within McLaren, and presumably Ron has a number of advisers. I highly doubt it's just him sitting in a big leather chair, smoking a cigar and pointing at the "sorry, no sponsors below £50m" sign on the door, which isn't too far removed from the vision I get from some opinions on this and various other forums.

Any contracts they negotiate will have a multitude of clauses and it could be those clauses that either party refuse to compromise on. In such a business it's never a case of sign a piece of paper with a number on it and where a sticker will go. Months of negotiations are

If McLaren know they can hold out in the hope of being in a better negotiating position in a year or two then that might be preferable, unless a stunning offer comes in in the meantime.

Well, one thing we do know is that their performance has gone from title contenders to wooden spoon contenders since Ron regained control...

That fall from grace certainly hasn't happened behind closed doors.

Just when you thought the new tyre rules couldn't get any more stupid and complicated:

teams/drivers must inform the FIA eight weeks before the start of a European event, and 14 weeks before a non-European race, the ratios of the three compounds they wish to use at that event, after being supplied with the options a week beforehand.

Just... what? So teams have to define their tyre strategies 2, or even 3.5 months before the race!?!!

The teams have to have chosen their tyres for the 2016 opening Australian Grand Prix by.... THIS SUNDAY!

Actually, I wonder if its 14 weeks before the race, or 14 weeks before the event. Because if its the event, then the teams will have had to have chosen their Australia tyres by yesterday!

I can't remember the exact date but it's very soon. Could have well been yesterday. Absolutely stupid.

14 weeks from the Australian GP is this coming Sunday, so if its "14 weeks before the event" then I assume that starts Friday, so yesterday was the deadline.

Your missing the point though, they have been turning down sponsors since the start of 2013.

Their deluded sense of importance starts from back when they were up front and winning races. It just looks even more deluded and stupid now that they are still in that mindset while they are floundering at the back.

I don't think their sense of importance is deluded. If that was the case then we wouldn't have 5 x 80 page threads on this year's McLaren car alone on the autosport forum, a million times more comments than any other cars this year. They are one of the most respected and biggest brands in the Motorsport, one of the most liked and most followed with one of the biggest fan bases. I don't see where they could be deluded for having any degree of self-importance.

They will be back next year at the front, just like Ferrari's pace surprised everyone at the start of this year, Macca will make similar strides. They were floundering around at the back this year - but that's only because they HAD to.... otherwise they'd just be another Williams - owned by a work's team, not given all of the magic and secrets to make them a success. They had to endure this season in order to become succesful in the future, without OEM technology no one will win a World Championship - it's no coincidence that Mercedes and Ferrari, both OEM teams are the best in the business right now. Everyone else - customer teams are the ones that are floundering around with no hope at all of winning any Championships.

You gotta break a few eggs to make an omelette.

Any other completely made up comments you want to add?

I get the impression they had many comments, but most of them were negative. Sure they have two world champions in their team and thus will be very popular but I'd say the many comments were in spite of the team/drivers, but because of their wretched performance.

Their performance on track.

They will be back next year at the front

Nobody believes this.

They were not fastest.

No, they didn't. They took they Honda engine way too early.

Everyone else - customer teams are the ones that are floundering around with no hope at all of winning any Championships.

But with a good deal more hope than McLaren.

You gotta break a few eggs to make an omelette.

Your support for McLaren is some way beyond admirable, and I say this as a McLaren fan myself. They screwed up enormously.

If McLaren win the constructor's championship next year it will be justified. If they don't it will not.

F1 is dead. Time to start again with out these very stupid power units.

Yeah, sure deuse. The power units are the reason why overtaking has fallen from last year....when they were using the same power units....

Tell me, what colour is the sky on your world? :p
