Yeah there have been a few reports of them turning down title sponsors for either not offering enough, or not "fitting the image" of McLaren.

Given that their image at the moment is one of being totally crap, quite who they are expecting to come along is beyond me?

I think the reason Si they dint want many year deals, their value is low and they can easily subsidise the f1 team with their other business. They aren't desperate for the money yet. Better to wait a few years until their winning or at least close to the front, than take a silly low 5 year deal now. I don't know what a title sponsor usually pays, but 30mil sounds low for a front running team.

Probably waiting for one of the pound shops.

They should've just taken 2-3 year deal at the beginning of this year because they wont be up there next year and unless they get the 2017 right they wont be then either. I'd rather take something smaller than nothing for 2-3 years?!

From the way Ron Denis has been talking lately, he wants to really shake up the whole group and bring in significant new investment. F1 represents less than one third of McLaren's business now, but as a 'shop window' to show off their capability I'd suggest it is still more important than that. They need success in F1.

But if your discussing title sponsorship deals with McLaren, are you going to base your offer on how they are performing now, or how they performed 20 years ago?

Are you saying that anyone who wants to sponsor McLaren should be offering comparable money to those sponsoring Mercedes and Ferrari? Even while McLaren's exposure and TV presence is more aligned to Sauber and Manor? And if you are offering that money, why the hell would you sponsor McLaren and not Mercedes or Ferrari!?

I think you have the same delusions that Ron has.

Whatever. Nobody is going to throw front runner money at McLaren any time soon, regardless of if you think they will be better in the future.

Edit: The Vodafone deal was £50m a year while they were winning races and championships, so £30m for being utterly awful and able to beat only Manor (if they finish at all) seems like a pretty good deal to be honest!

Edit 2: Actually, some places report the Vodafone deal to only have been about £40m a year. Turning down a £30m sponsor offer now for being not enough is just stupid.

I agree totally that McLaren can manage perfectly well on the income they have right now, and they can manage on that amount for the foreseeable future.

They are not desperate for money, and pouring money into them is not going to change anything in the short term, wait a few years until they turn it all around and get back up closer to the front of the grid.

How long that will take no one knows, but there is no point at all in getting tied up in a long term deal, that they do not need.

Wait a few years let the natural ebb and flow of teams in F1 jiggle everything about and they will be back up front one day, I am sure no one here will deny that.

Your missing the point though, they have been turning down sponsors since the start of 2013.

Their deluded sense of importance starts from back when they were up front and winning races. It just looks even more deluded and stupid now that they are still in that mindset while they are floundering at the back.

To be fair, given the (in my opinion, stupid) stance that the EU are taking on Alcohol avertising in Motorsports I can see why McLaren might be reluctant to have signed Jonnie Walker as a title sponsor.

But that aside, turning down millions of pounds because you hold a blinkered view of your team that hasn't existed for 20 years is, as you say, ridiculous.
