Kevin Magnussen completes deal to replace Pastor Maldonado

Kevin Magnussen will officially be unveiled as a Renault driver on Wednesday ahead of the new Formula 1 season, replacing Pastor Maldonado, Autosport can confirm.

Woohoo!

I'd be surprised (and worried) if anyone managed to spend just as much money on tweaking turbos and adjusting ERS solutions as they did developing the entire engine from scratch.

I think Mercedes are the only ones to be open about how much they spent, and it was about $500m over a couple of years to create the base V6 that will be here until 2020 at least.

But they're not developing from scratch. They're introducing incremental upgrades and will be designing and developing multiple versions of those before deciding what will be fitted.

We've drifted from the original point anyway. If you say the token system is designed to reduce cost then you must also accept that it restricts the ability to develop to close a performance gap, which in turn helps maintain performance differential. Which means that F1 will remain dominated by engine manufacturers, and much as it pains me to even partially agree with him, means that Newey's point is correct.

Lotus/Renault's costs just dropped dramatically for 2016!

Watch K-mag bin it on his first outing in Australia...

Pastor Maldonado has revealed that he has left the Lotus team ahead of the 2016 FIA Formula One World Championship.

The Venezuelan had been due to continue with the team, but will now be absent when they reveal their new Renault identity later this week - with former McLaren racer Kevin Magnussen widely tipped as his replacement.

Maldonado came into Formula One racing in 2011 as the reigning GP2 champion and scored his sole victory with Williams in Spain the following season, before moving to Lotus for 2014.

In a statement posted via Twitter, Maldonado commented: "Today with the biggest humility I inform you that I won't be on the grid at the start of the 2016 season. Thanks for all the messages of support, passion and concerns about my future.

"I'm very thankful to God, my family, my sponsors, my friends, my fans and everybody who has helped me materialise this dream of having represented Venezuela in the pinnacle of motorsport.

"See you soon!"

No I never want to see him again. Just read the above also, and great that Magnassun is replacing him.

Justice is served, what's more shocking is the fact he won a race in F1. Opportunity totally wasted with that sort of backing.

It's weird that he won that one race completely on merit then went back to being completely useless. I guess he just had some Weetabix for breakfast that weekend.

I'm kinda with Sparc here. Glad to see the back of him, but will miss the fact that in the majority of races he'd create some sort of action to be worthy of watching... Hopefully there will be plenty of other action to keep us watching this year!

He doesn't look like he even knows a car is there. Hardly looks like he's taking a tighter line on the exit.
