Hopefully, but I actually think it's unlikely.

Meanwhile Zhou to Alfa is confirmed as the first ever Chinese F1 driver. I don't begrudge Zhou that seat, he's a talented driver who has achieved a lot despite coming from a country without a strong racing tradition, and without the development from his earliest years that European drivers get. Still, it stings to see him get an F1 seat while his more talented stablemate languishes for a year.

Italian Jesus is expected to be announced in a Formula E seat shortly.
Let’s be honest, any driver in his third year of a series should be expected to do well. And he was beaten by a rookie. His money got him that seat.

I see they have started giving details of the Gen 3 Formula E car.

https://www.fiaformulae.com/en/news/2021/november/gen3-introduction

"The world’s most efficient racing car – at least 40% of the energy used within a race will be produced by regenerative braking during the race

The first formula car with both front and rear powertrains: a new front powertrain adds 250kW to the 350kW at the rear, more than doubling the regenerative capability of the current Gen2 to a total of 600kW

The first formula car that will not feature rear hydraulic brakes due to the addition of the front powertrain and its regenerative capability.

An electric motor delivering up to 350kw of power (470BHP), capable of a top speed of 200mph (320 km/h), with a power-to-weight ratio that is twice as efficient as an equivalent 470BHP internal combustion engine (ICE)

Lighter and smaller than the Gen2 to enable faster, more agile wheel-to-wheel racing"

With some of the specs there, think some of the tracks are going to need to change!

I know it has its detractors, I for one am a fan of the series and this looks like a pretty big step up with some serious performance. Lets see what it looks like when it arrives!

I was pretty disappointed by the last championship - it had too much rules nonsense - but I've enjoyed it overall. Looking forwards to seeing the cars on track. I should look into seeing whether we can visit some live races this year, I really enjoyed the last one I watched live.

I drive an electric car and the regen braking on that is pretty much the same as braking, to the point I rarely use the actual brake.

There are videos online of Richrebuilds towing a Tesla behind another car and the regen at 70mph is enough to charge the battery as quick as a supercharger

So I can definitely see how this would recover a lot of energy… it would certainly mean “lift and coast” would add a new element as you’re effectively recovering MORE electrical energy by lifting off sooner at the expense of ultimate lap time.

Great stuff :)

I saw some talking about it in the race thread, but rightfully was shut down as not specifically race related.
What are everyone's thoughts on this Merc sponsorship nonsense? Feels like absolutely everything needs to be a drama now.

How much is this specific company really to blame?

Pretty sure the oil, alcohol and tobacco (and no doubt countless other sectors) have killed more.

Can you explain what your talking about

The Kingspan - Mercedes sponsorship deal, that has been deemed extremely poor taste, and awful.

Edit: The way some are talking, you'd think Kingspan's CEO personally started the fire.

"Kingspan have stated that they played no role in the design or construction of the cladding system on Grenfell Tower, and that a small percentage of their product was used as a substitute without their knowledge in part of the system which was not compliant with building regulations and was unsafe."

This was a good bit. Not even being aware your product was on the building, but it being your fault.

It's like saying Jamie Oliver kitchen knife was used to stab someone so let's blame Jamie Oliver as he wasn't aware his product was being being used for the stabbing

The issue is that even being seen to do something which could be conceived as being negative towards Grenfell is incredibly toxic in this country and politicians often feel the need to weigh in.

The intervention from Gove comes across as an attempt of political point scoring at a time when they are going from disaster from disaster. They are probably a group that shouldn’t be attempting to get on their moral high horse right now.

The ‘best’ quote in the article is actually from Kingspan though.

"The new partnership with the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula 1 team reflects the ambitious sustainability targets of both organisations."

I just can’t see how F1 and sustainability can ever feature in the same sentence. The F1 circus must be one of if not THE most environmentally damaging sports there is going, particularly when you consider how many people actually participate. The issue isn’t them ragging some cars round a racetrack, it’s the air miles F1 racks up which is what is utterly bonkers these days.

It's not a good bit, it's nonsense.

The product was for sale on the open market. You don't need permission to buy it. It was certified for use on tall buildings when it wasn't suitable, and Kingspan knew it wasn't suitable.

Read these and you might understand why Kingspan are as toxic as their product was :

If it's as open and shut, then they'd probably be done in by now.
They're still operating, and should still be doing everything a company of their size should be doing. Motorsport sponsorship included.

Inquiry is still ongoing. COVID kicked off in the middle of it IIRC. Phase two starts soon. Kingspan are also Irish which probably presents some issues with prosecution.
