The figures I heard knocked around for Jordan in 1991 were in the region of $10m, which is what, $20m-ish in today's money?

Budget cap last year was $145m. 145!

Not only that, but the 191 was decently competitive for a fledgling team too, a semi regular points scorer.

I can remember when HRT and Virgin were around there was talk about a 60 million cap. That was only what ten years ago? It's basically doubled since then.

A few changes to the rules regarding shortened races:

2 full RACING laps (no SC/VSC) must be completed to count as a race.

If under 25% race distance completed by the leader = Top five score: 6 points for the winner, then 4, 3, 2, 1

Between 25-50%, top nine score: 13, 10, 8, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1

Between 50-75%, top ten score: 19, 15, 12, 9, 8, 6, 5, 3, 2, 1

Also 3 sprint races confirmed for this year, top 8 score points: 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1

We have no idea this year though, maybe if the rules and designs work correctly and overtaking and close wheel to wheel racing actually occurs, the sprint races could take on a whole new element, instead of last years processions.

It's an improvement, but I think calling 2 laps is taking the wee.

But then if there is a repeat of the race like Spa last year, we would now get zero racing at all, as the cars would never be allowed out to race at all, not even just 2 laps, in that kind of weather.

There was zero racing at Spa last year. Calling it a race was a joke.

Indeed, I know I was there, so I agree, but at least cars were on the track, and that was good.

Under new rules they would never leave the garage, thus making being a spectator a waste of time.

I'm surprised at your perspective, it does not seem a common one.

I still think (1) they could have raced, and (2) Masi was aiming to have a race not just cynically running them round for two laps to avoid the fans getting refunded. But, either way, the conditions last year were the exception not the rule, and if it really does happen they can't race I'd rather admit it and cancel than have a farce like last year.

Going all that way and seeing nothing would be the shame, and a bad outcome.
Seeing something was better than nothing.

Under modern safety concerns there is not a hope they would ever have allowed proper racing.

They had hoped maybe the track would clear by running cars round for a bit, but spa is not a normal track, and no way it would ever have cleared enough to allow racing.

Rule always has been two laps is a race, change in rules just means those two laps cannot be under safety car or VSC.

Which just means if the weather or whatever else means cars cannot run freely, they will never be allowed out of the garages. Doubt they will even try a few laps behind SC to try and clear track, they just won't go out at all.

Been to spa eight or ten times every year for last thirty years, that weather was almost the norm , by no means an exception, just unluckily that kind of weather coincided with an F1 race rather than another formula or class.

As far as I can remember the sprints were ok as a spectacle. The problem is the higher ranking drivers have to be careful and play it safe, whereas the lower ranked ones can go he'll for leather. Maybe good for TV, but you get someone who has for example, put in a belter of a quali and sitting on the front row then have that taken away from them by some mad lunge. It's like Masi-time on steroids; purely for the spectacle and not rewarding the fastest driver as the sport should.

Agreed. Congratulations... you got pole P1 in qualifying. Now you get the opportunity to finish the sprint race and start on pole*

*If you win the sprint race. Ps, watch out for crazy divebombs in to Turn 1.

Brazil was good because Hamilton was out of position and on fire. The others were garbage but the bigger problem is that they damage the shape of the weekend, and rob the - usually much more interesting - normal qualifying of its importance.
Yeah agreed. I'm not sure why f1 wants to essentially demote/ignore the skills required to simply drive a car round the circuit as fast as possible in one lap. It's an integral part of being a racing driver.

Aren't they planning to make pole pole again? So qualifying is for the actual race and something 'else' for the sprint race?

No, the pole is pole again as in the person who gets pole in the qualifying gets counted as having got pole in the stats and gets the pole trophy, but the person who comes first in the sprint still starts the race on pole.

Yeah.
