Motorsport Off Topic Thread

lol indeed. I asked this a while ago but having never been to an F1 race I was wondering if there would be much trolling of Verstappen by the British fans? Tshirts and signs etc? Guess we'd never see it on TV...

Piquet apologies to Hamilton

“I would like to clear up the stories circulating in the media about a comment I made in an interview last year,” Piquet said in a statement. “What I said was ill thought out, and I make no defense for it, but I will clarify that the term used is one that has widely and historically been used colloquially in Brazilian Portuguese as a synonym for ‘guy’ or ‘person’ and was never intended to offend.

“I would never use the word I have been accused of in some translations. I strongly condemn any suggestion that the word was used by me with the aim of belittling a driver because of his skin color.

“I apologize wholeheartedly to anyone that was affected, including Lewis, who is an incredible driver, but the translation in some media that is now circulating on social media is not correct. Discrimination has no place in F1 or society and I am happy to clarify my thoughts in that respect.”

Make of that what you will.

I'm calling doubling down or taken out of context.

I am pretty sure it is the same as what Suarez and Cavani did even though there was no malice of it. Lost in translation of what is different cultures.

We use the word for a female dog quite a lot in not a bad way but in some cultures and languages literally translated it is way worse.

The chummy picture with Jair Bolsonaro, the various personal insults over time and likely homophobia regarding Senna suggest to me he's exactly the type of person that would land himself in a situation like this.

Nope: https://www.gpblog.com/en/news/1139...acism-red-bull-won-t-give-an-explanation.html

Which is standard really as it's well known how hard it is to get Horner to give a statement to the media... oh wait, no.

So from that link it seems that Merc, Ferrari and Aston Martin have made a statement about it.

So why single out Red Bull? They've made it clear with the Vips thing that they don't tolerate it (and he was directly linked to them and their junior program), just because Max is banging Piquet's daughter doesn't make them (or him) responsible for some racist old bugger's behaviour

Makes me think Red Bull have already put money into Hitech and can’t get it back and if Hitech drop him they’d need to pay it back.

Im all for redemption and humbleness, but the thought always remains, if he’s saying this in private among friends then I really doubt it was a one off or the first time.

I don’t understand why people give a **** what a rich old guy says. I have far more respect for someone willing to air their idiotic views public ally than I do for all the masses who blindly echo the current zeitgeist on whatever the flavour of the day issue is.

The man’s fantastically rich but quite clearly knows **** all about politics. He suggested Putin should run Europe. He suggested that a man who has presided over the management of a ******* awful economy that only functions due to money from natural resources should be running Europe.

I really hate this idea that any “wrong” views should be subdued. It’s stupid and dangerous. Let the idiots hang themselves with their words. If you can’t defend your own views against someone like Bernie then you shouldn’t be arguing for them.

^ There's a very long and sensible answer to that which I dont have time to write now. Short version is; he has a platform, he has influence over people in power. Unfortunately his opinion does matter more than yours or mine. Let's hope he gets banned from the paddock/etc. for life as well. Waste of space he is.

Of course his opinion matters more than ours but trying to just shut these people up rather that explaining how they are talking utter **** doesn’t do any good.

Was it Bernie who gave Hitler faint praise once? Can't believe it was Mosely.

Bernie is just kindly showing us how lucky we are he's gone from f1.

Pretty sure there is a video of him going through a revolving door and ending up coming back out.
