Mountain Biking

New bike has a saddle carved from pure granite :(

Highly irritating as my old bike has a lovely saddle on it that I could just have swapped over but it is totally the wrong colour.

I need a yellow saddle - or yellow and black.

Charge Spoon in Lime (which despite the name is yellow not green) is completely out of stock everywhere.

Yellow and black Nukeproof - £38 but no idea if it's soft or hard or worth the money.

May have to just lump for a plain black Charge Spoon, or just buy some padded shorts instead.

Don't know if you know or not but you can order a custom Charge Spoon from Charge and depending on your spec, it doesn't cost that much more. https://custom.chargebikes.com/#/ch...r_C1,base_E1,bumpers_D1,logo_G1,stitching_F1+)

It's pretty good. The car park (£7) is in the middle of the track so you can session the North or South side easily. I preferred the south track - A nice climb up followed by a very good fast decent.

cash only parking? just so i know whether i need to withdraw some money before hand. Yeah been looking at the trailmap was thinking of doing both north and south loops, might even give the blue a try, time depending, if its worth it that is.

Great ride up Whinlatter, worth the trip across there, looked mega busy when I turned up, but didnt bump into too many on the trail.
Did north loop before lunch then the south loop after, would have stuck around for longer but I was absolutely hanging out after being on the ale last night:(

Loved the north loop descent, wasnt to keen on the climb though, maybe because i spent most of it trying not to throw up everywhere.
the south loop climb was a lot more enjoyable, and the descent was great, a little more technical than the north loop but by christ it wasnt half greasy on the south loop in the forested parts, only just pulled it back from the brink of disaster on no less than three occasions, think i might have been running a little too high on tyre pressure too which didnt help at all.
Dont think i'll be a regular up there, a little too far, but i'll definitely pop back every now and then for a change of scenery.

? Tidworth open during winter months? I'm down there for a month over November/December, was hoping to get lots of riding done down there.
It was closed the whole time I was there at the start of the year.

Army posting?

only problem with tidders is that being made from chalk - if its wet it doesnt ride at all
I think its open in the winter but if its not been dry for a good while then forget it

rogate isnt too far away (bout an hour from tid) and rides all year (its sandy)

Just a course, I've ridden it when it was a bit greasy before, and it was interesting to say the least.
I'll be trying to get as much riding done as possible, so plan or visiting the usual spots, Tidworth, Aston Hill, Rogate, and possibly a little further afield like FoD or possibly Black mountain which i'm really keen to try.

What's the issue with riding on a chalk trail? Lack of grip or something else? In my mind I can't picture why it would be any worse than other terrain!

wet chalk normal trail = fine
wet chalk berms / jumps = death

its like riding on an ice rink, tidworth has berms made of solid hard packed chalk that even on slightly dewey mornings are impossible to not slide out on

Fair enough :)

Think I've only ridden on either gravel or dirt so far. Definitely prefer dirt for the less jarring/tiring ride! Plus roots are fun :D

Need to try and get a ride in at the weekend. Not been out in a few weeks now.

Ok - went for a Maddison Flux 2016 in the end - in black. It's essentially a Charge Spoon with fractionally softer padding, £18 delivered.

I'm still on the lookout for a yellow Charge Spoon though - it'd just suit the bike so well, plus my OCD would be soothed.

This Kore saddle that came on the bike will be hitting Ebay tonight - it may weigh less than a packet of crisps but it's like sitting on a stone.

Like chopper said, the problem is that there's nothing for your tyres to bite in to.
Deep mud can actually be grippy if you had spikes on, but nothing grips on chalk nor can your tyres dig in... it's just instadeath.

I've not been out on my MTB for months... going to take it out at the weekend - it's just been stood (inside) in the garage... anything I should check on it other than tyre pressure?
