Mountain Biking

I've not been out on my MTB for months... going to take it out at the weekend - it's just been stood (inside) in the garage... anything I should check on it other than tyre pressure?
Quick check of bolts, brakes and gears. ;)

Cheapest place for the new m8000 groupset? £360 on CRC (Drvietrain)

id check the weather

if raining - stay inside :p

Heheh :)

Thankfully the forecast is *currently* sunny on thursday and friday and then cloudy saturday, so after it's rained for the first 2-3 days... it'll hopefully have dried a little for the weekend :) It'll still be a mudfest, though, of that I am sure. Just not a completely miserable one.

What setup you going for Rhys? Double Chainset or Single? I got 1x11 on my Trek (SRAM though) and love it!

Double on the Aeris I was thinking 11-42 and 36/26 upfront I THINK :p

Edit: Maybe 1x11 (11-42) will be enough for the hills though... not sure. I do a fair bit of pedalling see!

I think I have 10-42 and a 34 up front. I can make it up pretty much anything. And I'm entirely unfit.

Get a cassette expander, unless your buying a new drivetrain anyway then 1x11 now makes sense.

Unless my maths are wrong it works out just under £300 on bike-discount. I presume, crankset, chain, cassette, rear mech, and shifter...

Thanks :) What kind of riding do you do mainly Jono? And where?

Cheers Begbie, I was going to ask what you're running on yours? Correct, I'll also need to source some XT / Zee Brakes too.

Swapped my skinny road tyres for something a bit bigger this weekend...

a lot bigger

Race face cranks, nw 32 rf ring, slx mech and shifter with hope expander and zee brakes. Doubt I'll upgrade for a long time, though I do fancy some carbon cranks.. 1*11 is at a pretty nice price point now, I'd be tempted if going for a new bike.

Is it not cheaper for you to buy the full bike from bird, rather than building?

Nope. £2500 for the M8000 build. Plus I'd rather spec different parts than what they offer.
Think it's going to be 1x11. Brake, bars, stem I'm unsure of.
Forks are ready (160mm DP Pikes). For £350 I'll certainly give them a go.

Cool pics Touch, got away with clearance without needing a new fatbike frame. How wide are those tyres?

It's a genesis caribou, a proper fatbike frame (just borrowed for the weekend though, not mine :()
Tyres are 26 x 4 inch running about 8psi. Front hub is 135mm wide, rear is 170mm.

So apart from the obvious of being able to ride on sand relatively easily... did you actually enjoy the rest of the aspects of how it rode?

I'm still struggling to be convinved by fat bikes as anything other than a bit of a gimmick. (and some of them have lol-worthy price tags!)

XT, Raceface Sixc and Atlas stem. ;)

What wheels you going for?

Cheers. it's a similar spec I was going for.. Can't decide between Renthal or the RF bars.

Wheels will be Superstar Ultra Hubs on their Tech4 EX23 rims (bought a Ultra wheelset last xmas for cheap but havent used them, will send them back to get restrung to the 650B EX23 rims, if superstar ever bloody reply to me!)

I was actually really surprised how easy it was to ride. I expected it to be good in sand and mud but I didnt expect it to roll so well on roads and other hard surfaces.
It's certainly not a gimmick, it's a legitimate choice for a good comfortable long-distance tourer. We covered around 150 miles over 2 days and it didnt feel like it was any more taxing to ride than my 29er hardtail. I'm sure it has other uses too, the amount of grip it has is incredible (not surprising) and it would probably be a lot of fun on singletrack stuff.

Having said that, I probably wont be buying one.

Where is a good place to go to for some DH tracks within 2 hours of Coventry(Midlands). Looking for somewhere to go on Saturday. Been to FOD and Aston recently so somewhere new.

Thanks
