I was actually really surprised how easy it was to ride. I expected it to be good in sand and mud but I didnt expect it to roll so well on roads and other hard surfaces.
It's certainly not a gimmick, it's a legitimate choice for a good comfortable long-distance tourer. We covered around 150 miles over 2 days and it didnt feel like it was any more taxing to ride than my 29er hardtail. I'm sure it has other uses too, the amount of grip it has is incredible (not surprising) and it would probably be a lot of fun on singletrack stuff.

Having said that, I probably wont be buying one.

I had a quick go on a Special Ed 650b plus a couple of weeks ago. Just seemed like a throw back to oversized "full suspension" tyres, of the 90's. Undamped pish! Although the grip and speed was different. Not as long a ride as you but IMO a gimmick/ very niche market.

I feel sad i havent been on my bike for probably 6 months now. Really hard finding the time with having just got a house and all the work were doing on it. The bonus is when i do get time im literally 10 seconds away from Clifton Country Park.

Get some lights, and get out in the evenings :)

Yes, they are aimed at a niche market but I dont agree that it's a gimmick.

It does what it was designed to do better than any other bike but also copes quite well in a variety of other situations.
I think a fatbike would suit the riding style+terrain of a lot of people but most of them are put off by the looks and assumption that they are slow and heavy (as I was before I tried one).

I still wont be buying one. I cant justify it when my hardtail 29er does a very similar job. If I was looking for new off-road touring sytle bike, I would consider one.

I completely understand fatbikes. What I don't understand is why a lot of people have them.

Live in Canada (or the like) that has a heavy snowy winter - yeap, totally makes sense.
Live somewhere where you need to ride on sand / the beach - again, totally get it.

Now, the plebs I see on the trails with them, because "man they roll over everything" and "they pedal incredibly well" .... they should go on and choke.

Did I, I don't ever remember saying i want 200+ travel to go to McDonalds. I remember you, you're the one that likes to belittle anyone that doesn't conform to your view of what a mountain biker should be doing with there bike and time on said bike.

Haha, I was yanking your chain - stick your tampon back in. Well done on the literal interpretation of the 200+ mm btw.

If I was really irritated with you or being sarcy, I would have pointed out the godawful grammatical use of "each to there own". :p

Fat bikes are this season "in" thing.. Totally pointless but hey.. if people want them and it gets them out riding go for it!

We remember you're the one who needed 200+ travel to plop off McDonald's kerbs :p

To be fair, even RockShox dont recommend jumping off macdonalds curbs:
