Mountain Biking

Any recommendation for a £400-£600 hardtail? Lightish for xc type riding.
Voodoo Bizango
Trek Xcalibur
That kind of bike.?

If 650b is ok then Saracen Mantra Pro - I had one and enjoyed it - 2015 models are drying up but depending on size needed you might find one for circa £500 ish, or just go for the 2016 bike (£599) and haggle £50 off or whatever.

Bizango is a great option - 29 that one - just need to wait for Halfords to put a sale on to grab yourself £50 off.

I personally found the Trek bikes at this price point a little under spec'd.

Thanks for confirming Merlin.

It seems the Saracen or Voodoo are about the best for £600 odd and seem well specced indeed for the money.

Stick 2 in

Would the same apply for a lightweight (i.e. scrawny) rider?

I've added 1, and haven't found a massive improvement/difference, but I've always been a bit on the side of 'slow n cautious' when it comes to changing stuff when it's working properly. :p

My view is your suspension is working right if you don't crash much!

finally sold the trek so ordered the rest of the bits i needed.

hopefully have it all (finally) built this weekend..

anyone want a 31.6mm reverb?

That doens't make any sense :p
I'd recommend 2 tokens to anyone who rides a bit harder than your average pootler on groomed trails.

Well, I've seen people go down hard because they're using a pogo stick on the front of their bike instead of a fork! :D

I'm just not much of a fiddler I think, I preferred my old forks where they had sod all adjustment options so they just did what they did. I prefer setting it, and leaving it rather than fidding about changing tokens, and messing about with air pressures all the time.

I'll probably try 2 tokens and see if I can tell much difference.

And what about if the suspension comes out the shop set up horribly (i.e: 99.9% of the time), should they remain ignorant and just learn how to ride an unbalanced pogo stick? :D

I get that not everyone's as "in to fiddling" as others and happy to set and forget... but I honestly don't understand why you wouldn't experiment a bit until you find your personal sweet spot... how else will you know what you like?

For reference, I'm a set and forget guy - after I initially got a setting I'm happy with (after a few local rides and an uplift day usually) , I don't tend to change it again.

2 tokens, around 25% sag cant remember rebound, around half way i think. I could do with 30% sag though as the ramp up with 2 tokens is big, not bottomed em out once at forest of dean or bike park wales.

If in doubt, go 32.. you can swap it to a 34 easily if you decide you don't need the 32.
