Mountain Biking

Hey all im thinking of building up a cheap DH bike so smash around, but a bit puzzled as to what frame to go for, does anyone have any experience in doing so and if so recommend any good frames to try and find for cheap? im sure there are a load of good frames for dh bikes from around 2005 onwards? dunno where to start!

Just bare in mind Geo has moved on a lot since then, if i was in your position i'd be looking for something like an early Nukeproof Scalp(2011/12), Modern Geo very very capable and fun bikes and still quite light. can be had pretty cheap, i've seen frames go for 300-500, you could even pick up a full bike for under a grand.

Does anyone have an experience in pressing in a reach adjust headset? I'm currently trying to press in my Works Read Adjust headset but every attempt I've made so far has has resulted in it going in wonky and needing to be knocked back out. It keep doing this because the steerer tube hole is off centre.
Any tips to help combat this?

What press are you using?

Heat up the frame and put the cups in the freezer. Then just bang it in!

I do this, then tend to just whack mine in with a bit of wood to protect it.

I had a right mare with the cups in the patrol. Ended up taking it to the LBS, even they took a few goes with a park press..

Scalp looks ideal, so many options on pinkbike for that! cheers

The press is just a cheap one from planet x but seems decent enough. The frame is a carbon V10 so I won't be heating it up but will try putting the cups in the freezer. I'll give it another go tonight before accepting defeat.

Got a work trip to South Wales coming up and decided to book the Friday as holiday and sneak my bike in the boot :D

Where would you recommend for an novice/intermediate sort of rider not looking to kill themselves on a hardtail? I don't know the area at all so I'd rather stick to trail centres. First thought was Bike Park Wales and just sticking to the blues? I probably wouldn't bother booking an uplift day as with it being on the back of a work trip I might have to change my plans at the last minute. Something more XC biased would be equally good. Thanks :)

To be honest i just take it to my local bike shop for stuff like this, costs a few quid and takes five minutes, plus the knowledge they have the proper tools to do it.

I have the proper tools to do it and I prefer to work on my bike myself as that way I know the care and consideration has been taken :) You'd be surprised at how many shops are clueless.

Sometimes you just need to know when to admit defeat and not half ass it :D the planet x press is no match for the park tools one :p

Fortunately I know the lbs I went to.

I'm not saying the press is as good as a Park Tools one. But it's plenty good enough to use once every people of years.
I know my local bike shops and unfortunately I know I'd do a better job! :p

So much choice! You could definitely do BPW, or something at Afan, Brechfa's red route could be an option, Cwmcarn... If you can get an uplift pass then I'd opt for BPW myself. If you can't due to wanting to be flexible, I'm not sure - you've got a half hour or so climb for every descent so you won't get loads of runs in.

I'm in Snowdonia for a week in July - best places for biking?

Antur Stiniog if you want some uplift-assisted riding. And/or Revolution Bike Park.

Coed-y-Brenin for a trail centre with several waymarked routes, some of which have great sections.

Marin Trail (aka Gwydyr Forest) for a very old school trail that has some good bits. And some boring bits. Apparently this was the UK's first official MTB route?

Penmachno which I haven't ridden yet and hear mixed reports so it's clearly not for everyone. Think it's another fairly old-school place that recently had quite a bit of work done to it.

Or off the trail centre route you've Snowdon (evening only at that time of year) and Cadair Idris and about a zillion other places depending on what you like.
