Mountain Biking

That sounds grim.

We have thousands of mosquitoes out here, and even they leave me alone. Must be the toughened Scottish skin.

From what I've heard too, the Avon stuff is the best. You just want the highest Deet % available tbh.

Got rocks?

Quick snap from todays ride.

Nice... how do you find the Lynskey frame? Don't suppose you know anyone with a road bike of that ilk?

I've had it 5 years and love it, the configuration changes from geared fully rigid, to singlespeed and/or front squish depending on what I'm planning. I've known plenty of people with MTB frames, never known anyone with a road frame.

Last few times I went round cannock I have come off on the same rock gardens. First time I landed on my knee (now have knee pads!) and the second time I landed on my bar end with my ribs. What's the best way to get confidence to ride it again? I ride more difficult trails at other places but with those rock gardens I seem to have a mental block now.

Is it them newish rock gardens near the end of the dog? If so i'm not surprised as they are rubbish!

If its on the black on monkey side you just need to look ahead not down at the rocks. Your bike and body will get you over them no problem.

Neither I am afraid, it is on the Red Monkey trail. I have linked a video of the section.

It's hard to tell from the video, but your arms look straight? Try have them more 'bent' get yourself over the bars. Are you sitting down for most of that? Might just be the camera angle again.

You don't look like you lack confidence from that video!

Might be the camera lens, but those trees look scary-close to the trail in places, I'd be worried about a total wipeout with the ~70cm wide bars on my Wazoo!

The video is not me sorry! I wish it was.

UTmaniac, You are dead right, the second time I came off was on the rock garden in that video at 20 seconds in. I caught my bar on the tree on the right halfway down it, the bike went down under me and I landed on the end of the bar. After that I went over the top and started rolling down the hill! Had to grab onto one of the trees to stop myself going further.

I've hit my bars on that trail when I had tiny bars, I think it was some drop at the end though? It's the only bit I can remember doing so.

Most of those rocks is just a case of having the confidence to hit them, you're bike will easily just roll over them.

Cannock is a very narrow place sometimes, on both monkey and dog. I can manage to get my 740mm through without much problems though.

Rock gardens are all about speed and confidence. You need to be at a good speed and follow through without indecision. If you panic part way through and try to turn or slow down then you're just asking for an off. The red rock gardens at Cannock are fairly narrow without much line choice so just follow the obvious bit and go for it, try not over think it. Your big 26,27.5,29 wheels wont get stuck on them tiny rocks.

I never felt like I had decent grip at cannock with all the shiny rocks. Last time I went I was running the new 2.25 nobby nics (the cheap dual compound version) front and rear. I have since swapped to go for a Conti Mountain King 2 2.4" Black chilli on the front only as I really get along with the conti tyres on my road bike. By the way this is on a 27.5 hardtail (Scott Scale 760) but I have changed my bars for wider with a 50mm stem.

Looks like I just need to be sure of myself though, I am off there tomorrow morning so we will see! Last times I've been there have all been at night too.

Just home from BPW enduro. Was a really good race blew it all on stage 3 as tried to pace myself as it was a pedally stage, held back too much and got to the bottom with way more to give. Last going off when I left I was in 20th but might go down further as people were still riding and re runs etc. Honestly scared myself in some places as race pace down bpw is frightening!

I also clipped in, I don't even run clips so first race with clips as well

Excellent result Knifey! Lovely day for it too!

Having not been out on the bike for some 3 months due to Xmas and then 2 months of illness after illness, today was the day! What a bike, she pedals SO well. Pretty sure my shock is leaking tho :(

Noooo not another leaking shock. Bird dealt with mines perfectly though!

Looks great in black! :)

Has anyone tried a Minion SS yet? I'm tempted between that and a rock razer with the HR2 upfront. There is no such thing as dirt out here, or rain for that matter.
