Mountain Biking

Yeah I didn't look for the bolt so good to know I can replace it already. I'm gonna put some loctite on the threads

I really, really, really hate tubeless.
I gave up on it ages ago, I just didn't think the hassle and agro was worth it, for me. Too many tyres blown off rims, too many tyre levers snapped and don't get me started on getting the bead seated...
I get on fine with tubes, haven't punctured in over a year, and the small grip improvement isn't missed.

I had a puncture up the mountain yesterday, gushing out too! I turned the tyre so the leak was at the bottom, gave it a few moments and it was sealed. I carried on. Never had an issue setting them up either. I've heard loads of people moan about them, mostly setting them up to be fair. But theres far too many thorns and other nonsense out here to not go tubeless. I love it, would never go back now.

I've once had the tyre blow off, not sure if it was tubless fault or not. I'm also not sure if it was what caused me to crash, or wether the crash was the blame. But it's the only time It's happened and I was running stupidly low pressures.

Must say some rims are better than others. The Mk3 flows with the super gravity mm/HD combo went straight on first time. Even with half the required amount of fluid in the rear as I ran out. T-rex tape is awesome.

Raceface came tubeless and always went up with no issue, never replaced the tape. Superstar rims, one layer of gorilla tape and also been perfect.HR2/Ardent on the RF and Mionion DHR2/SS on the superstar rims. Maybe I've been lucky.

Minnaar, he knows how to pull of Fort Bill :)

I had next to no issues (other than the front wheel taking a long time to hold the air in) when I converted both my Nobby Nic's to tubeless but the Magic Mary was nothing but a problem. Could not for the life of me get any air into the tyre for it to seat properly and that was with an air compressor. I thought it wasn't going to be a problem considering how tight the bead is but nope, had to stick a tube in it for the time being.

Regardless, I think I'm in love with Mary! :D

What a weekend that was, Fort Bill delivered as usual, weather turned out a lot better than expected, with only a few heavy showers on Saturday and a little bit of rain on sunday at the end of racing, my face and arms are acutally burnt, i spent so much time and effort trying to combat the midges that I just didnt think about the sun beating down on us.

Gutted for Danny he was looking fast but even had he not taken a tumble in the woods I dont think he would have beat Minnaar, caught a glimpse of Minnaar at most areas of the track through the weekend and he was just on another level.
Ever the professional he was even down in the woods on foot doing his homework towards the end of the juniors (the the only one I saw may i add), scoping out conditions and possible lines, did this make any difference at the end of the day? i dunno the woods changed a lot between the start of final practice and when he came down but it does go to show the level of dedication, professionalism and attention to detail that goes into his preperation and his racing.
He's not labeled G.O.A.T for no reason...

Been seeing a few riders speaking up about the Woods section on social media this morning, on how a number of riders had been asking all weekend for changes to be made to the woods section.
I'm not sure i agree (But then i'm not the one that has to ride it), that woods section was a mess and it was difficult, I sure as hell wouldnt have been able to ride it. But for years both riders and veiwers have been calling for tracks to be more difficult and these are the best riders in the world, this is the pinnacle of the sport, its not supposed to be easy.
But i dont know what they could have actually done to improve that section, a little bit of rain in damp forest with lots of roots on a relatively fresh cut track is always going to result in the the issues you have seen, i dont see sanitising the track as the answer here.

the problem with the muddy bit was that it was such a lottery,
not that it was difficult or not

it really took all momentum out of everyones runs
it stalled even the ones who made it through - i dont see how anyone would survive it, and those that did were very lucky

I also imagine that its pretty frustrating to be so fast, just to be unlucky on a goopy bit and spend the next 20 seconds falling over continually on camera while everyone laughs at you

I'm loving tubeless so far but only ridden a few times, real test will be South Downs when I get round to it. Took me a little while to get the first attempt on, but the other wheel was fine once I got my head around it, took a while to seal one of the wheels, but has stayed up since.

So I'm after a bit of advice on a bike for the missus. She's looking to get into riding and wants something that she can use for pootling down the cycle path but always wants to come out round the forests with me, nothing too extreme, green and blue trails at a push! I've been looking at the Giant Live Rove 2 or the Specialized Myka 650b, £499 and £450 respectively. Ideally she didn't even want to spend that much but it's her birthday in a couple weeks and I'd rather she got something vaguely decent than a turd with wheels that I'm going to have to end up fixing all the time. Anyone got any opinions on the above bikes or something else to look at? I'm leaning towards the Myka as it's a bit cheaper and also I've got a Pitch that's been rock solid over the years so I have a soft spot for Specialized.

Wouldn't really want rim brakes for going in the trails. This mught be worth considering as its on offer https://www.evanscycles.com/trek-marlin-7-2016-mountain-bike-EV242016 though its a bit heavy 15.5kg~

Just got my rear wheel booked at LBS for truing. The wheel was pretty wonky after only 3 rides :( it was a cheap wheel and I'd love to get halos but don't have the money for a new wheel. Only cost £15 to get it done

If your missus is ~5'5" or taller, you could do a lot worse than get her a Voodoo Wazoo for £360 including British Cycling discount at the mo in the current Halfords sale. http://www.halfords.com/cycling/bikes/mountain-bikes/voodoo-wazoo-fat-bike

I've had one for ~17 months, very fun bike, just swap the default Mission Command tyres for a pair of Jumbo Jims, which roll much nicer.

http://www.gooutdoors.co.uk/calibre-dune-fat-bike-p347149 is lighter out of the box, but costs £500 before Topcashback and could definitely do with a set of hydraulic brakes. The Juggernaut Pro tyres are light for fatbike tyres, but they don't roll anywhere near as good as Jumbo Jims.

Re the the woods section at Fort William, I think yes the tracks need to be harder but that section was borderline unrideable and dangerous. When most of the riders go down and or have to scoot through with one/two feet down, Rachel Atherton goes out with a dislocated shoulder from that section, Danny Hart had a bit of a scorpion type of crash that could've been real nasty.. Then thats when the organisers should have stepped in.

Apparently a lot of the elite men were heard calling the section dangerous throughout practice.

If it's been folded for a while it's best to pop a tube in for a bit to get the kinks out.

Tubeless – Have been running it for about 4 years now, utterly brilliant in all my situations (Hans Dampf on Flow EX, Minion DHR on Spank Oozy).

Fort Bill – Great race, Minnaar is just so cool and utterly professional. Watching episodes of This is Peaty and The Syndicate over the years and it's clear he obsesses over the smallest details. He's just the man.

The woods section did indeed look crazy, but part of me also thinks that riders have been whinging for a while about tracks being too easy, I guess there's a fine line somewhere.

I always thank RedBull for the coverage but it felt really sloppy at times this weekend, the woods section was obviously a deciding factor on a given run, yet for many riders they failed to even show it. Then some riders set off before disappearing on track somewhere with no explanation as to what happened.

On a similar note I saw a great video from Ben Cathro earlier, gives a real trackside insight. Interesting couple of quotes from Peaty in the middle about the woods section actually.

Every year I make noises about heading up for the race. Next year ... !

Aye, just going to run a tube for the time being until it beds in a bit!

On a side note, my Rockshox Stealth Reverb got delivered! :D

On ANOTHER side note, my bloody chain snapped when I was out around some local trails :(
