Mountain Biking

Gah - I quit mountain biking, then I go and break my neck off the bike! :p
Not really a broken neck, but cracked the disk between vertebrae ... but broken neck sounds way cooler.

Ouch! Lots of rest & painkillers, take it easy!
No way to cut a slot and try to use a screwdriver?
Not easily due to the location and width of the 'bolt'. Any cutting of it will weaken it far too much so it'll just break easier than it has done already.

It's too small to use any drilling/extracting tools I have on the bolt so unless I can grip it hard enough the other side with mole grips, while jamming a screw driver into the slot (turning both sides together) I think I'm going to be out of luck. Bonding to it I don't think is going to be strong enough, it's such a small area (~3mm)

Had a customer with the same problem in the shop the other day. I ended up having to split the caliper in half with the two torx bolts on the back of it and use pliers to get the pin out. Short term fix for holding the pads back in was with a spoke cut to length and bent at either end. Did the trick.
Was that with the Shimano RS BR-785 road caliper or the MTB XT M785?

With the road RS785 I read online that once split the rubber seal will need replacing, it has a 'T edge' so you can't use a 'normal' seal and Shimano don't supply parts/seals for this caliper to stop people servicing them. I don't know how true but I'm also struggling to find an individual caliper for sale (CRC out of stock are about the only place), the only stock elsewhere seem to be sold is with a lever for £200-300! Several guys on forums mention replacing them with R505's (£30-40). The XT version (M785) looks very similar and a much more reasonable price (£50-60).

Seems I *could* wait until CRC have stock (July!) for £35 if I can't get this bolt out. My pads may last that long. My other options are splitting the caliper and chancing being able to reseal it, or drilling the bolt out and risk wrecking the thread. Maybe even warranty it to Shimano if they'll accept it. Need to see what the LBS think really (they may even be able to source a caliper!). :o

Good day out at Descend, no uplifts on today and honking weather, but trails were running grippy as usual, managed the day with only one slow motion off on The Shoot, ended up off line and weight in the completely wrong place, long stoppy into a tree and got unceremoniously tipped off down into the undergrowth, no injuries and got a good laugh out of it so no harm done!
Mini Champrey got the best of me though ended up massively off line after a root knocked my rear round just before the big steep left hander near the bottom and there was no way i could salvage the corner, had to take the walk of shame down the steep bit... :o
But all in all a really really good day, one of my mates attempted it all on a 29er hardtail and to his credit did pretty well, I've won him over to the darkside, he's now hunting ebay for a cheap downhiller.

It was a BR-RS505 caliper. The guy hasn't had any issues since I did the job for him a couple of weeks ago so seems to be fine. There's no reason the seal should need replaced everytime you split the caliper given it's just mineral oil that's in them and the seal just sits in a wee recess between the two halves. I'd understand if it were a dot fluid brake or the seal was somehow attatched. It's pretty much just an o-ring.

Ok, thanks. Very tempted to split it as failed to get any purchase on it with mole grips on the currently small exposed bit.

I was looking at getting a Magic Mary for the front wheel of the bike and CRC just happened to have a sale on them! Managed to get a couple for £37 each as opposed to £65! :D

Snap!

I got a tear in my rear Mountain King II at Swinley yesterday so I've used the CRC sale to grab a MM for the front and an HD for the rear (along with some other bits and bobs).

riding my mtb home and a bolt falls of my spd shoe so i couldnt unclip at traffic lights -.-

you can use disk rotor bolt for temp fix, but yeah it can catch you off guard same thing happened to me while riding Porcupine Rim in utah and led to an interesting moment.
