Mountain Biking

Just back from the glencoe enduro, great day out destroyed now though. Will put some pics up later

What are some decent level of protection knee pads that are comfortable for pedalling in for several hours?

I was wearing Smiths Scabs (skating pads) and they're completely unsuitable for bikes.

I use Fox Launch things, great and I barely notice them. But if I was buying now, I'd go for the Raceface ones Supercow posted a bit back. (I'm tempted to buy them anyway, I really like RF products)

I run 661 knee pads and have had no issues!

Hope all who went to BPW had a good time, weather got better and I would have come along but had work to do :(

The weather ended up being really good. Even had sunshine at parts today too! Incredible, first uplift type biking I've done and it was just amazing. Can't wait to visit again. Great meeting Rhys and Supercow too. Cracking day. Shattered now though!

Was the uplift on? Bet that was awesome fun :)

You to mate. Was a great day and luckily the weather held out. Pity you and Cow are buggering off to To another land! Would have been good to get a few more rides in!

Lucky to get a good few runs in on the uplift too!

My right leg is mangled this morning :( right down the back of my hamstring and calf. Can just about walk... :( no idea what's going on there.

Time to wash the bike :(

Do second hard bikes (hardly used) sell well? I bought this about 6 weeks ago and have managed to get out on it twice in that time! (working away, bank holiday weekend, no car to travel with it)

On the plus side its more expensive now than when I bought it and you can no longer choose to have upgraded Pikes on it

Oh, you're one of those..

"Buy my second hand bike for near new price because it has 'upgradez' & has gone up in price". I'm afraid it doesn't work like that.

Second hand bikes sell well but expect to lose significant money on it.

Six weeks, used it twice & already selling it on? Think we have another SuperCow in the making. :D

Edit: Btw Guest, what size is it?

Ive not had enough I am just always busy at the moment. Be it training courses, weddings, birthdays, festivals...

18" (medium?)

I probably won't sell it, maybe I'll just have to buy a car so I can take myself places mid week after work

Sadly mtb and having a car almost go hand in hand. If I never had a car I couldn't justify a mtb, or at least not where I live currently.

Yes, it would help a lot having a car but unfortunately dont have one - I can't justify the expense living in a city centre. Things like parking alone is £100 a month.

I am also having to move out my apartment unexpectedly so that will cost around £1000 to move into another place

I have some medium (I think) fox launch pro elbow pads that I bought with the knee pads and have never worn them, even when I went to PBW. If you want I can send them to you to try as they have been sat in a drawer for the last 1.5 years?

cheers for the offer dude. I went bike shop earlier and had to get XL fox as my massive gunships tore anything smaller.

Some friends and I did a 35mile Evans Cycles Ride it event yesterday. Towards the end I started to fade on the hills and my legs started to feel like they were going to cramp. My friends however kept chugging along.

Afterwards whilst cleaning our bikes we compared gear ratios. I run a 39/27T and a 11-36T. My friends were pretty much all using 40/30/22T with a 11-36T.

Meaning that they have easier ratios for the hills. That coupled with the fact that they weigh up to 25kgs less than I do might explain why they didn't fade so much (we are all of similar unfitness).

I've been looking at changing my crankset to a 36/24T and I see the numbers will mean an easier ratio on the climbs but I'm not sure in real world terms what the difference would be.

Is anyone able to offer any comparison that might mean something?

Will it make things noticeably easier or should I just work harder and reduce that 25kg weight difference between my friends and me?

Do you actually find yourself in the lowest gear you have on your bike regularly? If not then unless my logic is entirely flawed I wouldn't have thought having a lower gear ratio would make any difference at all.
Personally it's pretty rare than I'll use the bottom 2-3 gears. Pretty much only if I want to have an easier time popping the wheels over any obstacles.

Think you'll have more to gain from getting fitter and shedding some weight.

Good to see some of you in BPW on Saturday! Curse my ****** shoulder though, I was going great til just after lunch. Had to ride boring old XC blue trails at FoD today, even that was a bit tricky. Nice to be out though, as they say. Reckon that is me off the bike for a few months now til I get it fixed properly.

All the time. On fire track climbs I tend to prefer to spin rather than power up them. And then when things get really steep there isn't much choice.

Fair enough, guess it might just be that I've got pretty short gearing / happy to power through / avoid steep hills!
Think my point still stands, if you find yourself using low gears a lot some extra will be handy to have :)

Weakness + cramp sounds more like nutrition problems than bike setup (but could be anything really). A lot of people get cramp when they start to become dehydrated.

How much did you eat and drink during your ride?
I'd guess 35 miles would be over 3 hours? For that sort of time in the saddle, I would probably eat at least 3-4 cereal bars and drink 750+ml water.
