Mountain Biking

I'm going on my own steed, meaning Highly skilled subclass of visa. Again with more luck, is that my brother in law is a developer at a South African originated, insurance company in the area that I want to move to (Sunshine coast).

It also so happens by pure chance, that the CEO of the company, I used to play rugby with at high school (and shagged the same girl... but that's another story). Long story cut short, I've had an interview with their head of IT, who really liked me and said that when they have a position available, I would have it (the job I interviewed for, was essentially already taken as they needed someoe quick, but they interview me anyway). They are rapidly exapnding into NZ etc, so work is aplenty. I'm not walking into it as such, so I'll take contract jobs while I wait for a spot to open up there.

What specifically do oyu do in the RAF? You might not know it, but your job role might be on the SOL (Skilled occupation list), and if you are an electrician or the like, then you pretty much walk straight into Aus... if you're so inclined.

Not at exactly the same time, and this was before smartphones young one ;)

... I did find out later on that there was however a bit of overlap as opposed to swords crossing, the whore.

Sorted out my fubared Hayes Stroker Ryde brake lever/master cyl problem by just binning the whole thing and buying a new Hayes Stroker Ryde front brake assembly complete. CRC were doing them reduced from a staggeringly expensive RRP of £74 down to £22. The fella fixing my bike had suggested I replace it with a Shimano Deore brake instead but as a stop gap (I'm off on a weeks holiday on Monday to Whinfell and I'm taking the Cube with me) I decided £22 for a brand new Hayes unit was a good option.

Also, gents - where is this trail and has anyone got any details? Its near Askham apparently, I found it when I Googled 'Mountain bike trails Whinfell' and was led to this image plus a link to a streetmap page:-

Map Details

Looks stunning. Any info on it would be appreciated, I'm off to Centre Parcs, Whinfell on Monday and I'm hoping to get a day to myself to go ride some nearby trails.

So are you just going to apply when you get out there then?

I'm a Radar Technician (currently). Our trade is huge, which doesn't help narrow down what I actually do. I've done all sorts. Network management, low level electronics, radio technician and now a Radar Technician. It's never something I've thought about seriously though. I think NZ could tempt me more than Aus for some reason. Though I've yet to even visit either.

*Goes to check SOL.....

Edit - So it seems most of those are on the SOL list  I never even thought it would've been!

Gold Coast.

Are you moving to the gold coast cow? If so that will be a massive change! Parts of it are absolutely stunning.

I lived in Perth WA for a year and it was awesome, looking to move the family out to Oz or NZ in 2017 if things go to plan. I've not visited NZ and I think the money is significantly better in Oz.

Loved Brisbane, awesome city!

Yeap, most trades are on the list, and you guys pretty much walk in easily as long as you're verified by the governing body of your occupation. NZ even easier :)

Goldy is stunning, but too busy and expensive. I'll most likely be working in Brisbane to start (contract work), but living along the Sunshine coast around Caloundra. Loved that part of the world, it's very much what I'm used to... and Noosa just rocks

I really don't think it will be, although "Software Engineer" is listed on the SOL.

We have an office in Sydney but they battle to get people over for certain positions. The Oz government will only let them apply for visas for certain roles.

Object Oriented Programming
Operating systems - (Unix, Linux, Xenix, Network OS)
Programming - (C, C++, Objective C, Visual C, Basic, Visual Basic, Java, Assembler, Cobol, Pascal, PL/1, Fortran, PHP, Pearl, AS3, FoxPro, and similar)
Software Engineering
Testing strategies and methods - (Software Testing)

I admire your courage to move again. It's taken years to build up a credit record in the UK and not to be thought of as a complete liability. The thought of doing it all over again scares the **** out of me.

Thanks, though I believe you should live where you feel the best suited to.
There are a lot of "ping-pongers" who move over there, and realise the grass isn't greener on the other side and come back.

If it wasn't for mountain biking, then I wouldn't have survived here. I've come to appreciate the UK and love it for the people since I've been biking, but I'm just not a European / Northern Hemisphere denizen at heart.

Good man - hope it goes well.

I would love to live elsewhere, experience life in another country etc but the wife is deep rooted here. her mum and dad are 5 minutes away from us etc. I think the kids would be fine and would just deal with it etc, however the wife would not move away from her parents at all.

Both her and I are on the ANZSCO list jobs wise - would love to go. Canada takes my fancy as well!
