Mountain Biking

Looking to get back into MTB after a long break, when my last got nicked and I ended up spending the insurance money elsewhere...

I don't really want to spend more than 500ish at mo, as I'll just be going on rides on my lunch break around field/wooded areas and simple trails. Swinley is also near me which I used to go to occasionally.

I was looking at this:

Vitus Nucleus 29 VRS

With a code I can get it for a smidge over £500. Are there any better options around this ballpark?

Cheers!

In typical OCUK fashion, someone asks for a recommendation based on a max budget and I'll suggest something higher.

this is £150 more and comes with a vastly superior fork, better brakes, better tyres and a dropper seatpost. 27 inch wheels but if you're a small, medium or want a more agile bike then it's perfect.

If you get back into riding and end up looking to progress, you'll be glad you paid the extra.

But if you do have a strict budget, then that bike is still a great choice.

If your budget can't be stretched the Nucleus is a solid buy. The Sentier is a good step up though if there's wiggle room.

@GuruJockStrap @Minstadave thanks both. I was keen on a 29er, for no real reason really other than I heard it was a more comfortable ride. But I think you've convinced me to grab the sentier if it's worth the extra bunce. As I'm just dipping my toe back in for now I can't really justify the stretch to the £750 for the 29 sentier

I was I'm a similar position at the start of the year and went for the Bizango Pro. If the Sentier 27.5" was that price I'd have snapped that up. The Sentier even has a dropper post.

Bizango pro does look a beaut but very out of budget. Sentier 27.5 sounds like it will do me nicely, ordered and will see how I get on. Appreciate the advice!

The spec on those Vitus bikes looks amazing for the money. The only thing I don’t like about them is that the frame itself looks a bit rough and cheap judging by the finish of the welding and the support added to where the seat tube meets the top tube.

With the dropper and Z2 fork at that price you can forgive a lot.
Yeah, I think the fork alone is a £500 retail price bit of kit. Granted that they probably buy in huge bulk and are able to get it cheaper per unit cost but still, amazing price considering the rest of the spec is also fantastic.

I'm gutted that I delayed a purchasing decision on the 29er when it was £649 a month or so ago.

Yeah that was a crazy deal. I went from an ancient 26" to a 29er and wish I'd have tried a 27.5. The 29er feels a bit odd.

I have a Vodoo Bizango that's now over 4 years old and I went from a 26 to 29" and indeed it felt odd. Quickly got used to it. Very tempted to just bite the bullet and get that 27.5 Sentier because the price is so good but I'm 6ft and 90kg, so think the I'm better sticking with the larger wheel size.

Does anyone have experience with air forks ? I have inflated them to the recommended pressure 125psi but it still feels a bit saggy to me. Is it advisable to add a bit more pressure or do they take time to bed in ?

Thanks

What kind of fork is it? What do you mean by saggy? It sinks in too low as soon as you get on bike?

Rock Shox Judy SoloAir A2. think I have found the issue the rebound hidden underneath the fork was set to its lowest. Turning it up a couple of clicks the forks seem much better more responsive if that makes sense.

I've been doing some reading up on the sentier 27 VR which I have arriving this week, and apparently I need a shock pump? There's some pretty cheap ones on the rainforest which I presume will do. Is it to adjust the forks to my weight?

Are there any other essential bits of gear, cleaning/maintenance products etc I may need? I have a helmet but that's about it, and been out of the MTB game for a while.
