Mountain Biking

Am not sure what to buy, I want to sell my hybrid bike and replace it with a mountain bike, because of the way and roads I ride on there are a lot of bumps and I like to ride aggressively, however I also like that the gearing allows me to climb up moderate hills easily,

I was looking at either a cross-country MTB hardtail like the Trek procaliber, trek marlin or scott scale 930 (my budget is around 1100 mark max), but then I am also looking at a 2nd hand trek roscoe 9 or merida big trail 500 that can also do bike park or aggressive stuff

I want to primarily use it for canal rides and greenway, a bit of offroading and the occasional gisburn or dalby forest red trail, will i be sacrificing a lot of speed and climbing efficiency if I went for a trek roscoe 9, merida big trail or similar bikes instead of going for a cross country bike? or will the cross country bike be able to handle all those? am not planning on doing big jumps with it but maybe some tabletops and going down rocky terrain

Maybe this would be a good option

Just saying :p

Fair enough. TBF though the Occam is more of a trail bike and the fork can easily be dropped down to 150mm with an air spring change. The bike actually designed around a 150mm fork but felt great with the 160 so never changed it. Very efficient pedaller also. Though still probably too much travel for canal rides. Used to rip round the full loop at Gisburn though

you need to use disck brake cleaner ont he pads and the rotors and do a proper break in period before you ride the bike normally.

You don;'t break in sintered pads wioth going faster and stopping hard. they need moderate heat and full cooling cycles between. you need to do moderate controlled braking to wear them in, or you just glaze the pads.
you might even wanna sand paper your pads after you clean them if they look really smooth ands glazed over
I already did this :)
I've been riding MTB's for over 30 years, so fairly familiar with the brake pad change procedure :p

From now on, I'll be taking some sandpaper and disc brake cleaner on every ride. More things to add into the 'must need' maintenance box. Almost getting to the point where it would be easier to have 2x spare bikes on hand :p The appeal of renting bikes over buying them gets stronger!

This Friday i'm taking my son to Scotland for 5 days of some hopefully awesome riding
  • Glentress : eMTB's
  • Innerleithen : eMTB / DH bikes
  • Fort William : DH bikes
  • Kirroughtree : eMTB's

It's been a while since I did a decent Scotland trip (2014), so will be amazing to get back riding there !

My local trails, you should try and get some Golfie trails in over from Innerleithen.

Be careful where you store your bikes overnight at Glentress/Innerleithen gangs have been coming in overnight and targeting the lodges/pods at Glentress.

Thanks for the heads up!
Would you suggest : Keep bikes with multi locks in the van at onsite parking, or store in special bike storage at the accommodation ?

I forgot to add - any recommendations for insect repellent ?

Speaking of which, I’m hitting BPW tomorrow for the first time in 2 years. Hoping to not break myself since I’m going alone

I didn’t die which is a good result. Managed 9 runs under my own power. It’s a real game changer having 2 batteries, and I even managed to charge one at BPW’s workshop which helped.

I’m going to do Blencathra and Skiddaw in the Lake District this weekend, which was inspired by this video:

Get over to the golfie if you can. Just across from inners and so much fun.

Glentress also has lots of fun riding away from the main trails.

Also glassie bike park is so much fun if you happen to pass by.

Trust me to book an MTB trip at Fort William in the middle of the longest heat wave and dry spell in history but for the days we are at FW, Monday & Tuesday, it's forecast to thrash it down with rain both days :(

Hopefully it changes

The heat wave doesn't exist in Scotland, you could book any dates and get rain :p

Which hotel do you stay at when going to bike park Wales? is there any hotels that will let me take my e bike inside the room

I can't really help with this because I drive there and back in a day since it's only about 2.5 hours each way.

I seem to recall that the Premier Inn in Merthyr Tydfil does allow bikes in the rooms but you'll need to check.

its around a 6 hour train journey for me, might just make it into a 2-3 day trip and hire bikes instead don't know if I can be bothered constantly keeping an eye on my mtb in a 6 hour train journey

Hello Gentleman !! *swaggers in mountain bike area of forum, never been before*, how at thee cycling off road folks?

I am new to this! I just got a fun mountain e bike to muck about with - standard mid life crisis as per.

Whats the best cycling app? Got all trails but not many routes on so far - just easy off road routes be nice in the Midlands, North Wales & Scotland areas to start, any ideas?

Im planning a trip there with mates, it's about 4.5 hour drive for me so was looking to drive down the day before and then ride two days as it seems big enough.
Was looking at staying here.

Trailforks. Can’t go wrong with that.
