Mountain Biking

payday tomorrow which means .... time to buy bike stuff :D

looking at knee pads and a 1x chain guide (top guide only)

Looking at the POC Joint VPD v2 knees - are they worth the £££? if these things are not comfy I just end up never using them

also chain guide - I can run etype/s3 mount or ISCG05, CRC have a cheapy blackspire s3 thing that looks small and tidy, or could get Hope ISCG one - anyone run either?

My mate hated his POC kneepads, said they were the crappest most expensive pads he's worn. Can't tell from personal experience I'm afraid.

Surely if you're spending that kinda wonga, you'd be looking at the Scott Grenade Pro2, or the Raceface Ambush knees? The 7iDP control knee also got raving reviews on VitalMTB.

Get them on your Apollo!

Haha, that made me chortle out loud! ... but it's a light / sound frame man!

Internal cable routing is the work of the devil!!!

Took me 45... yes 45 minutes! just to route the cable of the Stealth Reverb, 45 minutes with sweat dripping down my forehead, and shouting every swear word in my vocabulary, even had to create my own tool out of a Pistol barrel cleaning rod to fit through the frame routing holes just to hook the hose so i could pull it through.
it then took just 15 minutes to complete the rest of the job including trimming and bleeding the hose.

its never coming out, no chance am i going through that again!

I thought new bikes had some sort of clever magnetic routing stuff? Regardless it sounds like a right PITA. How's the new bike?

no magical routing system here!

But as for the bike, very happy with it so far, i'm forever tinkering and swapping parts about, currently waiting for a set of centrelock to 6 bolt adaptors, and some 203m caliper adaptors, so i can fit the hope 203 floating rotors that came off the DH bike. braking performance from the SLX was good but i didnt like the lever feel.

Buy cables

Buy a million things I have probably forgotten!

Build it :D

Apparently the measuring will make it much more comfortable as I can get a saddle that actually fits me :D

Should come in at just over £500 without wheels/tyres. I am up to £483 right now, buying lots of parts second-hand to bring the costs down :)

Frame was £100 which is probably more than it is worth, but I really wanted it! The forks are another £90, so that's a lot of the cost there. I think I might end with a beefier fork later, but this should do for a while, whilst I get back into it riding.

That's a lot of carbon parts on a frame which is never going to be a weight weenie.
I like the bike though :)

Did you not consider getting a full build hardtail in stead, as the price will probably end up close to 650 / 700 with wheels , tyres etc. and will be a lot more comfortable ride?

It's not a dig, just curious.

So it's a passion project?

Yup, it's just because I always wanted this particular bike (frame) when I saw it in MBUK as a kid and could never afford it!

I also love a good project :D The great thing about this sort of stuff (as you know!), is that it can all be used elsewhere/upgraded and moved to different frames as and when desired. I also have no experience with modern bikes, so it's not like I am missing out on anything.

Haha, I can relate... think that's why I buy so many bikes...parents never had much money as a kid growing up, so I was always jealous of mates' bikes... while I was riding supermarket crap :p

The standard bike shown in the first pic in this thread:
http://www.bikeradar.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=10017&t=12906782
Is identical to what I had, till the frame cracked, and my brother got his local bike shop to build the stuff from it up onto a late 90's triple triangle frame (i think), which I have recently ridden.

So it is safe to say that i have been riding some pretty terrible machinery up to now :D
