Mourinho Sacked! Solskjær new interim manager

Robben and Cech arrived at Chelssea the same day Mourinho did. Do you really think he had no say in i

In my opinion Lahm and still Maldini were better than Cole, and he wasn't world class when he joined Chelsea.

Drogba was world class for more than you are giving him credit for. Essien, granted, was only world class for a season, unfortunately ruined by injury. But he was still world class for that year.

Spot on with Hazard though, I thought Mourinho signed him, sorry.

Varane played a lot under Mourinho considering he was only 18/19 when he joined. 15 league games in 12/13 is a fair amount for a footballer that young at the biggest club in the world.
Cech and Robben were signed months before Mourinho signed, before it was obvious he was going to become Chelsea's manager so yes, I don't think he had any say in it. Had Mourinho not won the CL he wouldn't have got the Chelsea job.

In 8/9 seasons at Chelsea Drogba scored more than 16 goals (in all comps) just twice - when he wanted to be he was an excellent striker but for the majority of the time he wasn't. He'd play well for 1 game in 3, that's not what I class as world class. And in those 15 (24 combined over 2 years) league games under Mourinho, Varane hardly turned into the world class player you claimed. He was nothing more than a prospect that only in the last 3 years or so has gone on to establish himself as a world class cb.

Does sound like it will be Solskjær at this stage. The main job now is to get the squad together and instil some sort of attacking tactical philosophy - something he's done very well albeit at a much lower level.

Its an odd one because we are clearly trying to get certain managers at the end of the season so anyone who takes the interim job is going to be out of a job at the end of the season. To leave a job to do that would seem stupid regardless of the club you are at.

At the same time, thats probably why the likes of Blanc etc don't want the interim job. You would only take it if you had a chance of continuing past the end of the season and its not like United won't be tapping up potential managers from now on and putting a plan into place (well, you would really hope thats the case).

I forget you must be new to being on the other end of a joke after watching manu have the easiest time for 20 years, also them showing pride in their club vs a fascist hole with some of the worst fans isn’t exactly outrageous

You don't think we have learnt to take a joke over the past 5 years...

Depends which way you look at it. In 6 months at Utd he'll probably earn more than 3 years at Molde. It also provides him with an opportunity to prove himself in the PL after the disasterous time he had at Cardiff, in the hope that he'll get a PL or even Championship job next season.

That’s **** all compared to any other club in the league lmao

Also evidently not if you literally want their manager which has delivered their only period of sustained success just to spite them, like in the grand scheme of things spurs fans have barely made a noise compared to the usuals.

(Except cm when he was allowed to post here)

What in the 2nd season when they got Walker, Mendy, Ederson, Bernardo Silva etc?

Managers will always have their input into who they would like. But at the top level these days those decisions are taken away from the manager for exactly the reason we now see at Utd. Managers come and go but the clubs must protect themselves from bad investments which is what Utd have not done. Woodward has made bad managerial decisions and bad purchases. For an attack minded coach now to come in the entire midfield needs replacing. Not one of them can pass a ball or has the creativity to open things up.
Just because mendy has been injured (I don't believe he had bad injuries prior to arriving which might have indicated a health problem) doesn't make him a bad player
Bernardo Silva IS a good player without a doubt.

Walker seems to work well in their system but even if he doesn't, everyone gets the occasional transfer wrong.

There appear to be considerable evidence that Pep agreed to KDB, Stirling and I believe Otamendi at the very least a year before he officially joined the club....I believe there were even some signings the summer before that Pep ok'd as well.

No managers do not usually have input on those signings significantly before they join the club (and Im discounting players that join in the same summer as the manager as you would expect this, or afterwards)

Im not convinced to be honest (that it would be a good move for anyone involved....apart from the paypacket -which is of course the last reason to take a job like this from the fans or club p.o.v

As a player he is an absolute hero , no question but for this subject has to be ignored

1) He is proving himself a decent manager at a lower level....and leaving the job for an 5 month appoiitnment at a massively higher level
2) His Cardiff time didn't really prove anything either way (admittedly this was a few years ago now)...but he could ruin his managerial reputation at this or even between levels beyond repair if it goes wrong
3) He is out of a job no matter what in the summer if he leaves his current position (will Molde take interim manager in the mean time - who knows but guess its a possibility)

Clubs pov

1) Very little Managerial experience at this level - could easily get worse
2) He knows and loves the club, but that wont mean a thing if results go against him
3) Media will give him time and knowing him he will be good to the media
4) He will respect the badge first (where JM didn't a lot of the time) and the players
5) Given its an interim appt will the players respect him as a manager - results/ performances may improve because of the change (even though some stats seem to suggest this doesn't actually happen) but will they be good enough to sustain top6 let alone improve? Very hard to say right now

If we cant make top 4 (which as I said previously is unlikely but possible) personally I would say do a Chelsea and drop low enough to be out of Europe all together so the new manager only has league / league cup / FAC to deal with come 19/20 season. At this point its imo worth more to not play in Europe at all (even allowing for the ~£30m? payoff) so the season is "easier" for the incoming manager. Europa doesn't prove anything to the biggest clubs and with the state of the squad it needs nearly a complete refresh before the incoming manager will be happy.

Mourinho didn't use Drogba as a 'goalscoring' striker though. If you think that a striker needs to be judged on goals alone to be called world class then there is no point in carrying on. Cantona only once scored over 20 league goals in a season, same with Peter Beardsley. By that assumption neither of those players would be world class.

Varane was 18 when he joined the biggest club in the world. Yes he has gone on to be world class after Mourinho left, but that was not the question originally. Mourinho undoubtedly helped him along the way and bought him.

Pochettino for me. He's got the experience in the PL, he plays good, attacking football and seems well liked by the club and players.

You can argue the same for every manager in the league though. Poch isn't in charge of transfers at Spurs. Klopp isn't at Liverpool, Pep isn't at City. They all have DOF who do that. The point isn't valid if you are going to cherry pick to suit the argument.

Pep is at city

They asked him who he wanted at cb he said van dijk was his first choice with laporte his second or third.

They asked him who he wanted at lb and he said Mendy is my only choice nobody else. So they got him Mendy.

You should watch the man city documentary on amazon

Not suggesting Levy should make it easy (esp given Poch 's brand new contract) but he would be too much of a pain to negotiate with (even via Poch's agent) imo

Unlikely to move but I would love to see Simeone

Doesn't he play really defensive football? That's not what I want to see.

He does and he has quite a few top players and is not expected to achieve much vs RM and Barca. He would be another bad appointment I fear. Defensive football with a team not suited to him and I don’t think he would be a good man manager when things aren’t going well.

I have seen the documentary, I just don't believe everything I see or read. Any manager with an ounce of common sense would say that their player is his first choice, just as every player who moves to a new club states it is the only club the would ever move to, it has been their lifelong dream etc etc.

You're the last person I expected to quote a stats article after the amount of times you've rubbished them in the past @FrankJH

Neither Cantona or Beardsley were out and out centre forwards, Drogba was and should have played a hell of a lot better and scored a hell of a lot more goals on a consistent basis. He didn't though. You were discussing players Mourinho signed and turned into world class players - I fail to see how Mourinho done that with Drogba. He was signed for a huge fee and barring 1 (2-3 years after Mourinho was sacked), maybe 2 seasons, he didn't consistently perform over and above the level that he was when he signed. His profile raised simply because he was signed for big money and moved to the PL. Imo Drogba is quite possibly the most overrated player in the past 20 years - on his day he was fantastic and people only remember those days or the important goals he did score but forget the regular, prolonged spells where he was useless and sulked about.

As for Mourinho helping Varane on his way to becoming a world class player that's hugely subjective and can hardly be argued with any conviction. He was nothing more than a bit part player under Mourinho, who knows whether he'd have continued his progression had Mourinho stayed at Real and who knows how much influence Mourinho would have had either way. He was hardly an unknown kid picked up from no where - he was one of the hottest prospects in Europe that Real signed ahead of a whole host of clubs. Much like every player on the list that he signed.

Anyway, we're going off track.

On the bright side, that new contract for Fellaini wouldn't be wasted ;)

I'm struggling to think of a player who was markedly improved under Mourinho compared to someone like Sterling at City (pre-formed at Liverpool just not the finished article) or Gomez/Trent AA at Liverpool. Also far from the finished articles of course but coming on under Klopp.

Simeone would be a horrible choice, no thanks. He's maybe not got the same ego as Mourinho, but he'd play negative, boring football, he worries first and foremost about not conceding. Poch would be my number one choice of managers we might realistically be able to get.

Suggestions that Solskjaer is being lined up as the caretaker manager. I'm not massively keen on that idea, he didn't do well at Cardiff in his only spell in the prem and managing Molde is a very different proposition to United. Blanc or Hiddink would be preferable to Solskjaer imo.

Yeah, so back on topic, for me I would like to see Wenger come in until the end of the season. I think his phliosopy on football aligns with that of Utd. It would be on the condition that he would then move to the DOF at the end of the season when Utd go all out to get Poch.

I know Wenger struggled in the last few years at Arsenal but I honestly think his eye for talent and his connections would make him a brilliant DOF. Him working alongside Poch would be ideal imo.

Would also agree that wenger would make a great DOF
