MSC Retires

I didn't think I would say this but it is a shame to see him go. When you look at the stats as mentioned above he has been doing rather well. A more competetive car and who knows what may have happened.

But most of all I would like to thank Corinna, and my family for standing always by my side, giving me the freedom to live my conviction and share my joy. That is very special

Thinking about it I can't even remember seeing his wife for a long long time. I'm pretty certain I've never seen his kid/s either.

Pretty refreshing from the drivers that have to have their media whore hanging about all the time.

amazing driver who's comeback has sought to tarnish that great memory of that driver.

Even more so in those newer F1 fans. How many people will just remember Schumacher as "that old guy who didn't do that well in a Mercedes"?

He admits he didn't achieve what he was hoping for. Carrying on would have just meant he continued to strive to achieve things that are getting harder and harder for him to do.

He needs to cut his losses, put a line under it, admit (which he has done) that he didn't hit his goals and bow out gracefully while there are still enough people around who remember what he has achieved to keep the legendary view of him alive.

Shame he was still easily worthy of a place on the grid even though he wasn't as good as yesteryear.

I still feel that he'd come back to a front running car, he would have won races and possible competed (not necessarily of won) for a world championship.

Still if you don't enjoy it anymore, then you need to move on.

For me he was "F1", I started watching it properly just after Senna died (at the insistence of my dad) and I couldn't imagine F1 without him when he retired the first time.

Second time round he renewed my interest in the sport a bit with the bits I loved as a kid, but has failed to live up to that icon status he had the first time round.

For me he's just not done him self justice this time round and picked the perfect year to retire (just like Mikka did) the first time.

It's a shame as I know he can still do it, it just hasn't worked out and a lot of people have seen the MSc I don't want to remember in the same way as my childhood hero, so a lot of newer fans will see the thing I hoped F1 had grown out of with a classic driver under performing through fear of what is next.

I honestly would love to see ferrari or one of the other top running teams give msc a RELIABLE car thats capable of competing and give him another year.

he really is one of the great drivers. 300 races in 20 years and over 90 wins thats a bloody good return for any driver.

i know a lot of people dont like him as he comes across as arrogant and occasionally unsporting behaviour Hill etc.

I don't think it tarnishes his reputation. In most sports people tend to retire mainly for 3 reasons:

  1. Their body gives up on them
  2. They want to quit whilst at their peak or just after (on the top or whilst they are ahead as it were).
  3. They no longer enjoy it

Plenty of footballers (as much as I hate to draw the comparison) drift back down into the lower leagues until they are no longer signed or aren't desired for their wage - purely because they enjoy playing at whatever level.

Sure you will get people who only remember them for their most recent endeavours, but in my opinion the fault lies with those people, not the sportsperson.

What he did to Hill has always tarnished my respect for him. I do not doubt his ability behind a F1 car but i don't respect him as a sportsman.

I wasn't a fan of him in the early days, mainly due to backing Williams/Hill and then Mclaren and not having a personality didn't help. However the stats don't lie and you have to hand it to him on just how well the whole Ferrari package worked over the years.

He knew coming back was only really for his own satisfaction of driving in F1 again, as everyone already pointed out that he could only lose out compared to what he achieved before. Shame he couldn't get a win with Mercedes (well, still a few chances left :)).

I hope he still has some involvement in the F1 paddock.

Of course, but the overall reputation of someone will be the combined opinion of the whole populous. There will be a lot of people who know little or nothing about his success in his first career and only know about the second one, so the overall reputation of him will be diluted.

I didn't like him back in the winning days but respected him, I rememberhow happy I was when alomso/rRenault beat him/ferrari. That's how good he was, my favourite ever year watching f1
Haha and the time he parked it in Monaco qualifying

Tbh for his legacy he shouldn't have come back.
