Multirotor, multicopter and quadcopter discussion - The Drone thread

Can you guys also advise on insurance for non commercial flying? I take it this is standard RC insurance I need to look for? Any pointers?

If you can stomach your local flying club, they can offer insurance as part of the membership. How this insurance works when you are not on flying club grounds/pre defined flying fields, IDK. I tried to approach two clubs and both told me to get lost with my new-fangled "drones" I can fly a helicopter which is far more dangerous, or a missile on wings like an EDF jet with minimal tuition, but a 500g mini quad? Not allowed :p

I'll take my chances in unoccupied public places until multirotors are more accepted or get banned because of Phantom noobs :D

And the 50m rule only comes into play if you have a camera on board that is "Gathering Data". If you are flying and not recording there is nothing in the air navigation order stopping you from flying anywhere you want. As long as you aren't flying recklessly...

Interesting, the camera is the deciding factor?

Yeah. Article 167 only applies if you have are gathering data (Be that photo, video, or meteorological, to do with dark matter, string theory... pretty much any data with any device).

Excerpt from an e-mail convo I was having with the CAA.

The restrictions in article 167 are there to maintain public safety; they are not connected with preventing ‘surveillance’ of congested areas (this is covered by the requirements of the Data Protection Act). When the regulations were created, the aim was to be proportionate to the potential risks involved and hence, only apply more stringent restrictions where we felt they were needed; there are no specific airworthiness standards for such small aircraft, thus operational restrictions were needed instead. With regard to flights close to people and/or properties, it was concluded that the most likely reasons/temptations for doing this would involve camera fitted aircraft, and hence this was where we focussed our effort.

Im TOTALLY STUCK! HELP!!

I am trying to get my turnigy 9x to link up with my DJI Phantom 1's NAZA.........iv synced the remote to the receiver, followed a million guides on ebay.........but my throttle is appearing as the 'u control mode switch' in naza assistant.......YES channel 3 is going to the T port ...........no idea what im doing wrong, please help :(

Rc planes, helicopters, and multirotors all fall under exactly the same ruleset...

Why the rise in awareness of it related to multirotors? All the news stories seem to only be about them, yet people have been crashing planes and helicopters into people and buildings for years? Is it the camera on multirotors that's getting them the attention?

Just seems a shame that all the bad press is aimed at multirotor enthusiasts.

That's really weird... Is your naza set to traditional radio type ?... Do the other basic functions work like elevator / aileron / rudder ?

It's just the media picking up on what's current, same as anything else. Plus they're genuinely more exciting than fixed wing.

Companies like Amazon and Dominos doing PR stunts with them doesn't help either. We all know how unlikely it is that Amazon will be using UAVs for deliveries within even the next 10 years based on battery tech, MTOM, regulations, feasibility, cost, etc, but the media don't take that into account because it's not exciting :).

Haha yeah it's just because they can put 'drone' in headline...makes people think some kind of killer machine is flying itself. Give it 20 years we might see fully automated drones doing deliveries... Techs not there yet

Under control just means exactly that, but in a non-driving sense. If it's a house it might be ensuring someone's not going to open a window and hit the UAV, if it's a power station it might be that it's not going to get turned on whilst you're hovering above the chimney stack. Basically when it comes to structures it's that the owner/anyone in it/around it/anyone controlling it (cranes etc) is under your control too.

Thanks that makes sense thanks!

That is a terrible attitude! I just watched the flightest video covering a RC event in America that looked superb, from quads, to cheap foamboard planes to incredibly detailed models. This is what it should all be about.

Sorry don't know anything about the naza :( But there is a manual for the 9x here:

Might be worth checking if there is any channel map/remap functions on both the Tx and the Naza.

Amazon deliveries.. As you said, range and batteries being an issue. I also always wondered in this pipedream how do they propose to land? Autonomously? Where? On my driveway where a car or a person could or not be? And how is it going to ring my bell? :)

I had exactly the same reaction. But then again, they wouldn't let me fly my T-Rex 450 or 600s with them either unless I completed some certification. They wouldn't of course help me with that or let me practise with them. It was just, "You're a noob and we're better than you because we're not noobs, go fly some place else until you're not a noob".
