Multirotor, multicopter and quadcopter discussion - The Drone thread

P2? How much you thinking of selling it for?

P1 I'm afraid but quite modded. We're looking for about £700.

- Tarot T-2D gimbal (tilt controlled from Phantom controller)
- 3D printed landing gear extenders
- Carbon fibre dual battery mount
- 5 batteries
- Peli-style foam case

And it's ready to take a Fatshark system (couple of small holes in the shell in the right place for camera, power and transmitter) though that was sold separately to Genoma.

Sad thing is (for us!) is it's probably done less than 10 flights - basically a few until we realised we'd need to upgrade to do anything commercial anyway. In fact I've probably spent 20x the hours on modding/tweaking it than flying it!

I'm thinking of selling my P2 - it's fun but I'm just not getting any time to play with it. Poor thing has been sat in the case the past 3 weeks. :(

I think I want something smaller and cheaper that I can do FPV/stunts with and not worry about when I crash it.

Guys, where can i get started with these kits? at first id like one i can attach my GoPro too and fly about for a few minutes, preferably battery charge for 10-15mins. Also budget would need to be fairly low just incase i don't enjoy the experience :D

Interesting....

I am right in saying he broke the CAA rules right? I thought London was restricted airspace, flying at 900 feet and mention of landing with people around him?

Not necessarily, though probably. You can get permission to fly in London and in urban/congested areas but that would involve being licensed and taking extra precautions like more crew to manage the public, proper segregation with barriers etc. I haven't read the article in full as I'm on my phone but it looks like it was just him, in which case yes he could be slapped and/or fined by the CAA even if he does have permission.

In other news our flight exam is booked for next Wednesday so hopefully we're only a few weeks away from being licensed!

P1 I'm afraid

Darn, i was looking for a back up P2.

I know i've asked this before but could someone point me in the right direction for getting a commercial use licence? Now that i've finished my first year of uni i can finally focus on getting that and hopefully my drivers licence :o

So i got my parts and it turns out without a resistor at all, the 6v 5a ubec happily powers two led's at a time without them or it getting warm. 3 leds results in two dull leds and one not lit. Didnt try just one led for fear of blowing it like i did accidentally hooking one up to a 9v battery to test polarity (thought the battery was flat but picked up full battery by mistake!)

It helped a fair amount with orientation at close range, however i'm struggling at distance. If the quad gets rotated i struggle to make out which way its flying to be able yo bring it back. This has resulted in two crashes this week as i panicked and tried to land to stop it going too far away. Hitting the floor at speed bent one motor mount and snapped a carbon arm! Whoops!!

Any tips for working out orientation at long distance?

Also, if i hit hard on the throttle from a hovering position the quad has a rudder drift while accelerating upwards. It didnt do this before i fitted the gimbal rails and gopro gimbal but seems to now. Steady acceleration is fine with no drift on the rudder but going quick makes it wiggle off briefly till i back off the throttle.

What have you got, a quad? On our octo the two rear arms are completely covered in hi-viz tape which helps along with the LEDs on each. I've also heard a couple people use a battery-powered maglite or similar but mounted horizontally at the back so you can only see it if the back is facing you.

Otherwise I find the best method is to just remember, and do minimal turns which isn't needed with our 360 gimbal.

yeah its a quad, for now... haha. Upgrade bug is setting in hard. It was going to be a little phantom style jobby for filming downhill mountain biking shots. Then i wanted a gopro gimbal. Now the hobbyking kk2.1.5 seems a little basic and i want gps/RTH. Adding the extra weight though is already taking a toll on the performance so i'm considering moving to a hex :p

I was watching this earlier so i think i'll give this a go. Got to try and get over my fear of it all going wrong and losing it or i'll never be able to fly it further than 200feet away

I have red led's under the rear motors and blue under the front so when its high the orientation isn't an issue at all. Good shout on the rear only led's though. Might be worth trying to stick some 3.5mm ultra bright red led's inside the gimbal mount rods that stretch front to back on it.

I think half the issue will be resolved once i get my head round what i need for FPV from the gopro. I have the gopro av-out lead that comes with the tarot 2d gimbal so am i right in thinking i just need a video transmitter/reciever and a screen now?

One from the other evening :)

I have a neighbor who is a filmmaker and got into quads early on.. He bought this when there was no basic kits out there and was from a german company . Its all carbob.. will take a dslr . Has gps/fat shark/camera gimble and all the extras/toys .

Run time is 25-30 mins and its quite a beasty !! Now i have flown a few.. have a couple of husbans . But he has decided commercially its not viable and its just taking up space and wants shot !!

What sort of cash would this be worth at a quess and worth buying ?

Looking for a really simple drone

Needs to follow me as I walk about
Do it's own thing, land and take off
Transmit live video to glasses, ios device (iphone or ipad mini)

Cheap

This is to help in recover rockets, high power ones. The idea is that this will be up overhead giving a view downward which helps as when walking across a field we can only see across and if it's crops then an aerial view be good.

Is there a kit or pre built product as such?

You'll find the resolution that FPV gives won't be amazing for finding stuff unless it's large items!

I use Fatshark goggles as I sit down whilst flying but I'm guessing you may want to watch where you're going, so something like a Black Pearl screen may work better with ImmersionRC or Fatshark video Transmitter and a decent camera such as a PZ0420 mounted at an appropriate angle. Likelihood is you'll have to wire this in yourself unless you buy a quad and the stuff from somewhere that's willing to do it for you.

I can quite easily see dogs running around and stuff from a decent altitude with that camera although it does take a bit of tweaking to get the best picture (there are loads of settings posted online that you can copy and play with).

It's just a matter of what Quad you want and how much money you want to spend. I'm a Phantom 2 cop-out and haven't yet built my own. :)
