Multirotor, multicopter and quadcopter discussion - The Drone thread

DB, I rewired my FPV250 to drop the 3.5mm PDB but I've got a bad contact somewhere, keep loosing throttle input, had this before with a loose connection but hard to diagnose. you mentioned a very light PDB - which one did you use?

I got mine from Abusemark (timecop) when I bought a Naze32 Mini. All the way from Japan in about 5 working days iirc

It's a 36x36mm jobbie, very similar to this one http://makeitbuildit.co.uk/index.php?route=product/product&product_id=79

I'm loving the products from MakeItBuiltIt tbh, the 5040 HQ carbon composite props are awesomesauce too

You need to provide your own Flight Controller so don't what the issues are.
The only ESC issue I remember was their voltage supply was causing issues with the KK2.1.5 board from starting up?

There was a batch of Afro 12a ESCs that shipped with 6V linear regs instead of 5... someone probably fell asleep on the production line

Oh I've got one of those about somewhere, got knows why I didn't use it and attempted to make a custom wiring harness around a XT60 cable. Ended up with probably just as heavy with all the solder on it :-/

I've got a 2.0 mm banana connector version on order, heavier but might use it for a new build.

Oh I got some 5040s HQ to try out too! I'm going to bench the 3 blade, 5030's and 5040's on a scale, need to go charge me batteries for that so will probably do it tomorrow.

Did you get a naze32? If so how did it fly?

Well, I've just dropped some cash on the parts for an FPV250. They just look so cool that I had to. I've gone with a MultiWii board rather than the more popular KK2 so I can put Megapirate on it and use the APM software. Also gives me altitude hold and GPS that I wouldn't get with a KK2.

This is what I ordered:

1 x FPV250 frame
1 x Cirrus MultiWii AIO board

Looking forward to screwing it all together.

Just wondering why you want GPS on a FPV250?

It was £16 for the module and I figured why not. I'll probably never use it but this is also for me to learn the MultiWii and APM software.

new toy arrived

Yeah, the only problem with the Taranis is getting hold of one.

Just been looking at some more reviews and seems that some people have had issues.

Any tips on how to test that the unit I get is in good working order without actually having something to fly currently? Is there software that will show a dodgy button?

I planned on getting this while I could, then use it in the future, just bit concerned that 3 months down the line it I go to use it and it turns out to be faulty and I'm stuck with it.

It's one of those Chinese carbon fibre 250 frames a la Blackout. Really solid, light and the finish if the CF is SEXY :D Got it from fatsharkstore.co.uk for £33 odd delivered, can't wait to get building

I got a small remote controlled helicopter for Christmas last year and absolutely loved it. I've always wanted to get one of these quadcopters so I could get some ariel photo's of my house and surround area etc. But I always thought they were mega money. I have to say that frame looks awesome quality and I might have to look into building my own. Hell I'd even just buy that frame because of how awesome it looks :D

Connect it to your PC and load up OpenTx companion (get it here: http://www.open-tx.org/downloads.html)
You can then see the position of every switch and lever to test that they are working.
Also you can get it up to OpenTx 2.0.x at the same time.

You can also see from the Taranis itself if you show one of the status pages on the screen.

There's a very steep learning curve with the Taranis but if you work at it and read some guides and forums you'll soon be programming it like a pro. The thing that foxes most people is that from the factory it's a blank canvas and does nothing, meaning that you have to program every control to do something. There are a few templates you can load that will show you the basics though.
I like this approach as you're not restricted by what some person in the factory has decided you can and cannot do with certain switches.

Just bought one very similar from ebay.... Was a few quid more but free delivery. That shop is very cheap and I see they have the 1804 2400kv motors in stock too, shame I already some others

My frame should be here tomorrow. New ESC's turned up yesterday (KISS 18A ones) along with props. God knows when the motors (SS2204 2400kv) will turn up, ordered from Whitespy in the states and then found out they are having massive delays shipping after I'd ordered...... not a good week for shopping!

So now I have to make a few decisions, maybe you guys can offer some advice?

Flight Controller 2 options here - Use my SuperX I already have, but it's a meaty bugger and weighs in at around 160g including the GPS. Not entirely sure I need GPS. The other option is Acro NAZE. I've not used multiWii before and to be honest, after the kk2, I'm not sure I can be bothered with faffing about tuning PIDs and there is no display, so to do it in the field means either laptop, USB OTG for my phone or a Bluetooth module for the NAZE.

FPV Equipment Which camera? Seems like the sony 600TVL is pretty well regarded and relatively cheap. I will be using the mobius I already have as the HD cam.

FPV Equipment 2 Goggles or Screen? I wear glasses with a relatively strong prescription so not sure goggles are for me in the long run. I know the Fat Shark ones have diopter correction but they don't suit my prescription and I have astigmatism in one eye too. Also, the Black Pearl monitor is relatively cheap compared to goggles......

Thoughts?

Any suggestions for extended life batteries for the Hubsan X4? I had two from my previously destroyed (crashed) x4, but upon charging one of them it ballooned so I need some more!

Thanks

So I chickened out of the Fr Sky Taranis and cancelled the order, just seemed to be more complex then I needed it to be, maybe one day I will need something with all those options and if so I will see what's about.

For the time being I got a Turnigy X9R but what else do I need to use this with a 250 build? From what I can tell I need a receiver and module. What do you guys recommend?

To be honest, with OpenTx on the X9R you have most of the functionality of the Taranis anyway. The X9R is a great transmitter for the money.

I have no suggestions of receivers for you though. Others will.
