Multirotor, multicopter and quadcopter discussion - The Drone thread

I use the Phantom for that Russ. There's not a lot you're going to get that's much smaller that can take the Naza and GPS.
I suppose you could build one of those mini quads and stick a Naza on it but they don't have much lifting capability and suit the KK2 much better.

Hmmm, maybe I should scrap the GPS then. Just love the look of these micro/macro quads that are the size of a palm.

Also like the quads that (I think pazza?) posted here where the frames are made out of whatever.

Build one of the mini quads with a KK2. I flew one a while back and they're great fun. No GPS or altitude hold but they auto level. They're a lot more involved than flying a Phantom.
I've got a Hubsan H107 that I fly around my living room. It's a right hoot for £30.

By more involved I meant effort in taking it out really, as opposed to difficulty or effort actually flying. For example the Phantom, going out with a big peli case (can't walk that far without it being knackering), loads of LiPos, bigger/attracts more attention, more costly to crash etc.

Rilot, would you recommend the H107 as a good starter drone to play with before getting something like the Phantom?

As I mentioned in a previous post I'm interested in getting a smallish drone to take aerial photos in the future, something like the Phantom (small so it can be transported and carried), although any recommendation on something that may suite those needs better would be good too. I was thinking the Phantom 2 with Trimble and gopro. Not perfect (doesn't shoot raw and it's a video camera) but I'm guessing anything that will hold a m4/3 camera will be significantly larger.

Well, the thing is that the H107 is a darn sight harder to fly than the Phantom. Anyone can fly a Phantom and not crash it with no prior experience whatsoever. I handed the transmitter to my mrs a few months ago and she was able to take off and fly about with no training and just a brief rundown on what each stick did. Once in the air, you can take your hands off the transmitter and it will just sit there, holding position and altitude.

The H107 meanwhile will crash and slam around if you don't know how to fly.

Saying that though, it's great fun, pretty robust, and will teach you about the finer points of controlling a multirotor without the risk of destroying something expensive. Plus you can fly it around indoors when the weather is bad. Although my son (8 months old) hates it and cries when I fly around.

Build a mini H quad Russ, you can fit a full fpv and GPS system with some creativity. Nice small footprint, one case for airframe, TX, lipos and spares. Can't beat it!

What's with the horrible whine in audio with the P2+H3-3D? Not that I really use audio, it's just that it seems like terrible QA. Going to work around it by using a cable from the live out to my vTx but need to figure out how to stop it snagging... May have to move the iOSD mini inside the shell.

Basically I want something cheap that I can crash and bash around to get some experience flying quads before I think about getting something at £1k with a camera! Any other recommendations for machines that would fit the bill?

Indoor flying is always a positive as well, can pester the GF...:p

So what do you guys find is the most fun with these. Is it worth just getting one that can fly or is a lot of the fun in the FPV aspect of it?

I'm certainly having a blast with the FPV250 Russ, it's fast, cheap and virtually indestructible, mine is completely held together with velcro and zip ties, which makes it a doddle to repair.

Apart from replacing a couple of motor zipties and props nothing has broken, and I flew it straight into a goal post today!

I've flown it a lot LOS, hugging the ground, spinning, etc and still a lot to learn as I still need to learn to flip it :-) FPV was a blast today too flying a circuit in my local field, round a tree and through the football goals.

All I carry is a small sports bag with a few lipos zipties and spare props.

So, what's a good setup for an FPV250? I see Electriflite have the frames but what's the most appropriate motor / ESC combo for these?

Kudos to whoever mentioned makeitbuildit for props. I ordered 2 sets in the early hours of saturday morning and they turned up today. Very impressed with the service, and after a quick flight the props seem very good too.

DB, I rewired my FPV250 to drop the 3.5mm PDB but I've got a bad contact somewhere, keep loosing throttle input, had this before with a loose connection but hard to diagnose. you mentioned a very light PDB - which one did you use?

I'm happy with the RCX 1804s motors and RCX 10A ESCs. The 12A Afro ESCs are also well rated. I think DB is running them.

I am now on the weight limit with a mobius + FPV gear on a 250 and thinking about upgrading to run off 4S batteries but that is a different ball game all together...

@russ
I can't seem to find it at the moment. I think it's more down to how you interpret the definition of "Valuable Consideration" as per the CAA Air Navigation Order. In CAP722 it does say that you can fly for in house testing purposes.
It's all so bloody woolly it's a wonder anyone is able to fly within the law.

@anyone with an FPV250
Do you fly with 3-blade props or 2? I see people using both.
