Multirotor, multicopter and quadcopter discussion - The Drone thread

Yeah the car park going round to Southbourne that few use (usually use the main one but road was shut)... it's a great place to fly early in morning. Just a few people there and lots of places to fly around. Nearly popped down when there was that fire other day to take a look but didn't get time.

Will go down there then at some point then, when I finish my 250 and better at flying it.

:D Funny thing is it's almost smaller than my BNUC-S ID card :p

your competent observer must have some really special eyes to see a quad at 1km+

Very funny :). Seriously though at 6AM in the morning in a near deserted area and not exceeding 80m above land I decided one wasn't needed... ok, that's against CAA rulings but I think a little common sense should always be used. We have flown there before in daytime, coned off large area of car park, rung Bournemouth ATC of intended flights, used ground stations etc etc

It's not like Trappy flying FPV around London at rush hour :)

The worst that could have happened is I ditched in the sea and lightly bruised a Mackerel :)

I have an issue with my 250. Ive just installed some 6x4.5 props and tested it indoors, one of the lights on the esc's is showing a constant red light when you add power but is green when there is no power. Its not rotating properly.

Am I right in thinking I need a new esc or motor?? It was ok yesterday.

6 x 4.5 sounds a little heavy for a small motor cyclone. Maybe it burned out but yes if I was you I would test it in isolation with a servo tester, try current ESC with new motor, then new ESC with current motor to rule out which. Might be a bad connection too. (My ESCs don't have any lights).

The other 3 start up ok but the dodgy one goes red on a different prop (5x4) as well. Ill swap the esc's/motors around and try and see which is knackered. Was flying nice with 6x3's yesterday.

Thanks Genoma!!

*edit* just had a thought (yes it did hurt :)), the motor still works but its getting various inputs of power so Im guessing its the esc that has gone. Just checked HK and they are out of stock. Typical !!

yes spare motors + ESCs are always a good idea to get. I've got some 6x3s to try too, they seem to be rated the best for the 250 but was running with SunnySky 2204 2300KV motors (mine are RCX 1804 2400KV). I need to get myself in gear and do some bench tests with a spare motor and a bunch of different props I have to see what thrust is being generated for each one.

4" pitch is a bit too high for those little motors and ESCs. The blade will stall.

By the way, guys in the south. I don't know if any of you buy from Build Your Own Drone but they have an office you can visit. I popped round there yesterday to sort some stuff out and they're really top guys. I had a DOA Naza and they just tested it and swapped it out for me right there and then. I will be using them from now on for everything.

I dont have a clue... Radio is nasty 72mhz, quad itself build quality is awful, not sure what it's based on. Not sure what Fatshark setup that is, looks quite old.

Value, who knows, not much.... Things are getting cheap these days, on that site Rilot posted they have f550 with naza lite with gps for 210 ex vat, that's amazing value. Just add battery's and radio gear

Bit confused with battery and warning light, I'm using 1500mah 3S 11.1v Tunigy batteries.

I set my KK2.1 to low voltage warning at 105 which is default this would mean 10.5v?

When plugging it into my overlander battery volt checker it says I have 3% left at 10.10v surely this is going to ruin the battery going this low? I was getting around 11min flight time.

Also why is it a fully battery is never 11.1 but around 12.58v?

I wouldn't pay £100 for that lot.
You've got a nasty old 72MHz radio, first gen Fatshark googles, what looks like a Microcopter FC with GPS but a really old one.
As Flukester says, you can build something much much better for a couple of hundred quid. Yes, you'll need a new radio but I wouldn't fly with that 72MHz one anyway.

A fully charged lipo cell is 4.2V so 12.6 for a 3 cell off load. The latest I land is about 10.2 but tend to land at 10.5. After 10.2 the lipo kind of drops off a cliff with voltage dropping rapidly... Go below 9.6v and you are gonna kill the battery, but it drops so fast you shouldn't be flying anywhere near that

Many say you should leave 20% in your lipo to keep it in good condition but you can only really tell this when charging without some kind of telemetry,. I leave a little less than that, but figure I'll change to new battery's every couple of years
