Multirotor, multicopter and quadcopter discussion - The Drone thread

Er..... Hmm.... Oopse...

:D

All im missing is a way to connect the XT60 batteries to 2mm ESC connectors, but I've got to wait for slow mail and some back order items, so plenty of time to figure that out.

How much did you get stung for? Having spent quite a while sourcing things in the UK before bailing I found that it was looking at least 50% more than from HK. So even being hit by VAT and some additional import tax it should still be cheaper.

Without going through emails, I think the order was for around £90 and had to pay £20-25 for tax/customs.

Just solder everything to a power distribution board. I had never soldered anything in my life and found it really easy, just watched some youtube videos.

That means buying a soldering iron, and as I'm trying to do this as cheaply as possible I'm tempted to get a pre made board for a couple of quid.

But I'll see, I might pluck up the courage to burn my fingers :)

Skeeter has everything else you ordered got banana plugs on it? Otherwise you will have to solder! :) I would consider doing this yourself as it's almost a pre-requisite skill if you are getting into electric RC :)

Soldering bullet connectors is ridiculously easily. Couldn't believe it when I tried it for the first time, was wondering why I was so worried about it. Other soldering is a little more tricky but not too bad.

I've finally got around to rebuilding my quad today! Swapped the connectors on the battery and quad to XT90 as the bullets were annoying me and working their way lose. Need to get a power distribution board as the mess of cables I have at the moment isn't great but that can wait until the next rebuild. Also had to swap out a knackered motor (it jumps back and forth rather than spinning smoothly)
Battery currently charging then I'll find out whether I rebuilt it correctly :p

I've been offered this for around £400. Is it worth it? Some poor choice of parts that would need swapping but is it a good starting point?

Rebuild was successful for a while... Was really rusty flying it, but on the second flight I attached my Mobius cam and am pretty impressed with how smooth the footage was when I was flying gently. Less vibration than I was expecting considering I hadn't gone through and checked the balance of all the props. Annoyingly the camera stopped recording after about 8 mins, which meant I didn't get to rewatch how I crashed it breaking the frame again...

Clipped a branch and rather than risking it being broken at that point and trying to carry on flying potentially causing more damage I just let it hit the deck. In hindsight I think it was fine, maybe a damaged prop at first but think I'd have been able to land it evenly but better to be safe than sorry.

Time to buy/build a new frame. The 2 flights I did yesterday were great fun and I'm kicking myself that I've put off flying it again for so long with all the good weather we've had this year.

Well, bit late to the party but I was bought a Hubsan Q4 nano for my birthday. I've not put it down yet, how much fun can one little toy bring? :D

Ive sorted out my bent shaft. Not at all painful :o:)

Just waiting for my esc, which will probably be a few more weeks as its coming from China.

Has anyone got one of the DIY FPV goggle sets? I'm tempted, but once you add on the additional bits required like a transmitter, receiver, camera, power supply, head mounting, etc it soon adds up, and I'm wondering if its better to just buy a second hand Fat Shark or something?

You can do FPV on the cheap, a camera is really not much. SecurityCamera 2000 do all sorts

A Tx and Rx set is also no a massive cost really so it is just a case of finding something to display the image on. Those Hobbyking goggles are super cheap but I have no idea what the quality of the picture is like

I was going to go for the cheap fatshark kit a while ago but I changed my mind because the resolution of the goggles was pretty poor. I went for a 7 inch screen with a built in receiver in the end which I got second hand. It also has a built in battery which solves the power supply issue so might be worth considering

If you mean the $30 one, its excellent. Got mine the other day and for the money its really impressive. Don't glue it as suggested as you won't be able to change lenses (it comes with 3 different strengths). I've zip tied mine shut. Excellent value and a bargain. Thing to remember, even if you move to more expensive gear, its good to have spares and these would make great "passenger" goggles :)

Hang on, that DIY headset actually comes with the screen and we only need to add transmitter/receiver + camera... Nice - think I might have to go with that even if it does look a little less cool than a pair of fatsharks :D

I'm thinking it would tide me over until I got an Occulus Rift. Since it's got better fov + resolution than the fatsharks.
Should probably build a quadrotor and stop crashing it before considering fpv maybe :D

Well I was hoping for a bit of advice on my question a few posts up but as I never got any I just bought it all. Got to go and pick it up sometime this week and then it's time to pop the old hubsan in the drawer :-D

The guy has offered.me his gopro for an extra £50 but I forgot to ask which one it is, is it worth getting?

At £50, probably. It's hard to advise about second hand RC stuff tbh, especially when you don't know what sort of life its lead. It looks decent spec stuff but the KK2.1 is a curious choice of FC in this age if GPS etc.

FPV is a whole different beast tbh. I'm still not great at LOS but took to FPV really easily. Too much time on the PS1 DualShock or something like that ;)
