Multirotor, multicopter and quadcopter discussion - The Drone thread

How long will the battery last for on the hubsan if it's not been flown for long and just the led's are running? Assuming it doesn't turn itself off which I don't think it does from a quick test.

Hoping it's still flashing tonight so I can find it in the dark :D

A TREX700 is a dangerous copter in the wrong hands. It's all about blade tip velocity and weight. The little 8" and 10" blades we use don't weigh much and so their inertia is only enough to cut skin despite the high rotational speed.
A 700mm (1.5M total rotor span) rotor has a huge amount of inertia and will cut skin, muscle and will break bones.

Hope you guys are flying these things carefully...

Yep, I feel terrible for saying no to my lad till he's practiced on a sim app as even the little x4 can be dangerous which he doesn't understand as it looks like a toy. That thing can seriously shift so god knows how fast the larger ones are. I have already been clipped by the rotors on mine in the house flying slowly and it's left a mark but not broke the skin and that was with a t-shirt on.

Just goes to show, these things really aren't toys, if possible I never fly my quads near people, animals or property. There are so many videos I've seen on youtube of people flying up ~50-100m from their back garden that make me feel really uncomfortable.
Even the best pilots and well maintained multirotor can fall out of the sky seemingly for no reason, all it takes is to hit a someone or something and you have at best a nice bill to pay and at worst sleepless nights over the kid you badly injured.

Also when updating FC firmware take the props off.

Storm brewing in Bournemouth, taken from approx. 300m above sea level

Thanks.. I think I was pushing range abit, when I came back down altimeter was reading 299 meters, though I was about 30m above sea level. Took googles off while it was up there and I couldn't see or hear phantom, just have to pray fpv doesn't fail :-)

Great shot. 300m is properly impressive!

In other news I'm still reading constantly about different quad builds to learn. Still yet to order anything and am currently having second thoughts about something as big as the plan I linked on the last page, 600mm is pretty massive and I'm thinking I might be better off starting with something smaller, perhaps using one of the 330mm glass fibre frames that Hobbyking sell with ~1200kV motors, 8045SF props and an 1800mah battery to keep weight around the 650g mark (at a guess)
I believe this would be more agile for chucking about but still cope with a small camera (808 #16) and some lighting for orientation.

Too many choices! Still loving the little Hubsan for just flying around so I don't mind delaying a little.

How reliable is fpv? I'm looking to mod my hubsan with a little fpv kit just to get a feel for it and so I can actually see where I'm going due to the hubsan being so small and losing orientation lol

I think fpv should be as reliable as anything else I guess. Too be honest even if video link failed and you couldn't see quad you could get back using GPS home lock mode

How you going to try fpv on the x4 ?, you don't have much capacity there for extra weight. I think a few have managed it though reading around

I thought as much, I've seen these little 1g camera's that others have used but the main cost is the goggles but It seems the fatshark ones work ok with the mod for the x4 so I can reuse those.

I'd rather spend a little to mod the x4 and lose it rather than £100's on a decent fpv platform and lose that, will give me some practice too :D

Spent all night hunting for various bits and pieces in the UK, it's bad enough trying to find things actually for sale in Europe! Think I'm going to have to give in and order the radio/receiver from the global section of hobby king and accept it's going to take donkey's years to get here :( Time to learn how import duty and stuff works I guess?!

On the quad side of things. I've been chucking my Hubsan around like a loony and whilst it charges just sitting and watch acrobatic videos all day, I've changed my mind. Going to go with a smaller quad (12" or so), 20A blueseries esc, ~1200kv motors and 8045 props I reckon. Think I can just about get everything for the quad from the UK store providing I accept that I'll need to be doing some soldering!

Seen some damn nice custom quads browsing RC Groups, Love this custom frame!

It doesn't take that long tbh.
Regular air mail has taken 1.5 weeks max for me.
And there is the new hobbyking shipping method ( option called channel shipping) which takes about 3-10 days, very fast. Usually just £2 extra on the order.
HK post is bad though, singapore mail is pretty good though. If you use channel shipping it will avoid the very long shipping times of the dreaded HK slowboats.

Don't lose LoS on anything you can't afford to lose (being a goody-two-shoes, don't lose LoS at all, ever)

I've learnt that lesson already at the cost of a new hubsan within minutes of getting my first one out the box lol.

I'm prefering flying at night and lowered the yaw rate so I can see it and not accidently turn too much too fast. I'm only flying "nose out" for now till I get better and can't really bank at all either :(
