Multirotor, multicopter and quadcopter discussion - The Drone thread

I'm looking for some recommendations on a first multirotor. I am not new to rc where previously I have had multiple electric planes (pattern, flying wing, few high wings) and I also have a fixed pitch heli. So I am not new to scratch building and dealing with electronics (I've rewound motors before) or the controls. So really I am looking for an outdoor model, how do they hold up to wind? I don't mind doing scratch built as well on the airframe.

In short what do people recommend?

The little hubsan is suprisingly good in the wind and thats tiny so I doubt any would have any real problems to be honest.

I'm new to flying so I got the hubsan x4 to learn with but even now I sometimes think it's too fast! I have lost one already I'm glad I only started small instead of spending a lot more on a bigger one. Starting to save for an FPV quad now aswell so when I'm better I can get a bigger one.

Think I might have bust the Hubsan earlier. Front left motor doesn't spin up half of the time, even if I hold it and tip it that direction :/ Give it a flick and it bursts into life sometimes. Not certain whether it is a motor issue or a gyro issue at the moment, when it does get going it seems to push a decent amount of air
All the props are pretty bashed up now so I'll try with the new ones when they arrive to try and hope that it is partially down to vibration from the current ones perhaps. *shrugs*

This is how my front right motor went before it died completely. I have a replacement(s) on order from eBay, they are advertised as the 'new' shorter shaft motors for the V2 LED and come two in a pack, one red/blue and one white/black it's cheaper to buy 2x2 Packs than a single x4 pack from the same seller for some weird reason. I just hope they are actually in the UK as they say, don't fancy waiting on the China/Hong Kong deliveries TBH...

It doesn't take that long tbh.
Regular air mail has taken 1.5 weeks max for me.
And there is the new hobbyking shipping method ( option called channel shipping) which takes about 3-10 days, very fast. Usually just £2 extra on the order.
HK post is bad though, singapore mail is pretty good though. If you use channel shipping it will avoid the very long shipping times of the dreaded HK slowboats.
I didn't know about the channel shipping, I'll have to remember that. I always seem to get stuff from the HK warehouse quicker than the SG warehouse, not sure why.

I have ordered a Hubsan after reading everything in here, some spare propellers and some batteries.

Anyone tested the usable load carry on it? curious to see how much room weight wise i'll have to stick a camera on it.

Yeh I'm thinking it is a bust motor. I'm still amazed it's lasted this long with some of the crashes I've had in it! :D
Looking at replacement motors I'm having a similar thought, I'm not sure if I want to wait for a China/Hong Kong delivery! Still waiting on the order from Banggood of the spare props and battery, wish I chucked some spare motors on there thinking back now! Looks like you could easily bulk buy from Banggood and sell in the UK for profit.

Managed to find the motors for around £5 with free delivery within the UK on ebay, so might do that. About 1 pint more expensive but without waiting 2 weeks! :p

I have 4 spare motors from my v1 hubsan which I blew up board due to incorrect polarity

Mail your addy to [email protected] and ill send you one.... I'm sure they were not damaged

Edit scrub that, didn't realise shaft different length, I though just the props were deeper

You can carry a 808#16 720p camera, but you need to take it out of its plastic case to get a reasonable flight time.

£352, that's just such good value for money.
Makes me want to get a second one.

He'll yeah, DJI are giving existing customers a $150 credit to the next gen or vision also. Ill be interested to see what both bring to table....

The vision is supposed to shoot in raw, and you can control pan etc from ipad. I wonder if it self levels like a gimbal.

I'm guessing the 2nd gen will share the visions larger battery bay also for longer flight times

When you say "Scrub that" - will those motors not work? Or have you edited out something else you had said?
Done some further testing and looks like it is definitely the motor causing the issue. It doesn't spin up in some positions and it can't spin half as fast. Aren't the shafts just longer on the old hubsans? Imagine I could just cut it shorter, much appreciate the offer either way :)

You have mail! :)
Will give it a shot, if worst comes to worst you'll at least know whether you might be able to get some use out of the other 3!

Back to speccing my custom build. Was reading up a lot again earlier and it seems even worse than choosing a car or a new pc component. For every 1 good thing you hear about a particular motor you'll hear 3 bad things. Seems the KK2 flight controller is the only thing I can't find anything bad about!

Cheers mate, I'll pop it out today.. will be interested to see if the motors are the same.

I love the way the DJI CEO in video I posted almost took off everyone's heads when he took off, not setting a very good example. I'm not sure I would leave a quad sitting in ATTI mode hands free at that height while doing a demo either

Built my first Multicopter the other day after the last of the parts arived. I got the Y650 Scorpion from Hobbyking, running from there KK2.0 board.
Havn't been able to get it off the ground properly yet, as it seams to be unstable, where it tilts to one side every time. I expect that after setting up all the ESC and performing a level calibration for the gyros on a flat ground, it would lift level, not fall over its self. Tryied everything i can think off, but its going to have to wait know as it snapped some props on its last attempt. :(
