Multirotor, multicopter and quadcopter discussion - The Drone thread

I have to stop reading this thread...... I so want to build one now!

Going to get an X4 for the wee mans birthday and if he enjoys that (7 years old) might make the jump to a kit/build as our new bonding/father/son weekend fun!

Had short but epic session this afternoon with some friends. My first proper flight on my un-tuned 250, a mate with his FPV equipped 250, another with a full Naza equipped 450 showing off coping with the wind, and a bunch of others getting their first taste of quads by flying, crashing, losing, finding and then crashing again using an X4.

I need to put some time and research into stabilizing my KK, and then need to fight the urge for some FPV!

Ahh I knew this would be expensive haha!

Just bought some more batteries, prop balancer, sheets of copper to insulate electronics and a new fpv camera. Probably going to order the eagle tree vector FC as I'm getting fed up of the kk's gyro sticking and not self leveling. Been looking at UHF aswell along with a new VTX/VTR setup too. I just want to upgrade everything :D

sheets of copper to insulate electronics

 :p I assume that's copper foil, to shield electronics from noise? Be careful with that stuff!

Side note, am I the only person on the planet that DOESN'T get any noise on their FPV video when powered from the flight battery? My set up is nothing special - cheapo Boscam 200mw vTX, Sony 600tvl cam, messy wiring and using servo connectors for modularity, absolutely no effort made with niceties like ferrite rings etc. Even on full throttle punch outs, I get no interference

I get very little, pretty much the same set up. I'm using one of the tiny VTX's though and I don't think the internal voltage regulation is up to much.....

Weirdly, I get less since I accidentally pumped 12v into the 5v side of my kvosd and fried it. Literally. I couldn't pick it up, it was that hot!

Yeah, That's the badger. MIBI were out of stock when I got mine though, so I paid a fiver more than that I think. There was a problem with the internal 3.3v step down inside the units originally as a lot of people complained about diagonal line interference, there's a thread on RC groups about it.

When I had the OSD wired up originally, mine (despite being the newer version with issue supposedly solved) still showed a faint distortion that got marginally worse as the motors powered up.

Checked again last night as the quad is fully re-built and zero distortion now, even when fully powered. I'm starting to think either the OSD was wonky, or I had a ground loop somewhere that I've removed by taking the OSD out of the equation. Might have been the 5v BEC I was using to power the OSD and the Naze though too. IDK.

Quad now weighs in at 498g AUW with mobius, 1500mah Zippy compact 25c, Naze32, KISS 18A Escs, Sony FPV Cam, 200mw VTX, DYS 1806 2300kv and HQ5030 Carbon Composite props.

Was well over 500g before but I have removed the 5v BEC (naze32 now has v-regs good for up to 16v!), removed the OSD, swapped the Red Aluminium standoffs for black nylon ones and cut down some of the wiring. Could still be tidier and lighter but will see how it flies first :)

Might post some pictures later and hopefully video tomorrow.

Yes, pics of those ESCs pls! We have pretty much the same setup, except I am using EMAX Simon Series (not SimonK) 12a ESCs. Have been using a KK2.1 for a while, my replacement Naze32 Acro should be on the door mat today.

These DYS BE1806 motors have to be the RC bargain of the year for me. So much punch and so smooth for £5. I really want to try these on 4S with 6" props

ESC's currently wrapped in 2 layers of shrink wrap but they are tiny, smaller than a postage stamp and they only weigh 2g. Soldering them was a learning experience. Not sure they are worth the price, but I'm probably not proficient enough of a pilot to be able to tell! I got them because at the time, there were lots of issues with the SunnySky 2204 2300kv losing sync with most other esc's!

I'm training myself on the 3s and 5030's for now. Will possibly go 4s and larger props at a later date when I'm used to FPV'ing about the place and a bit more confident.

Biggest problem so far is that I don't think the Zippy compacts aren't quite up to the job at 25c, I think I should have got the 35c ones. I'm only putting about 50-60% back into the packs after taking the on-load volts down to 3.2-3.3 per cell!

Incidentally, I have a spare acro naze32 kicking about now if anybody is after a flight controller? It has had the pins soldered by me, not to the highest standards but it all works!

Only issue is that at some point, a snapped prop blade has taken off the top of the red LED that indicates if you're in one of the self level modes, so it doesn't light up. No biggie and it all works otherwise.

Free to a good home - send me a message if anyone wants it :)

Aye, the on the 35c batteries myself. They come in mighty hot after a good flight but I typically put 80% back in at 3.2 low voltage alarm (springs back quite far when rested)

I'd love a second Naze32 for my a real basher if it's up for grabs :D
