Multirotor, multicopter and quadcopter discussion - The Drone thread

Ok I can't figure this one out.

I have motors with self tightening screws but I don't know which way they should go!

If the motor turns clockwise, should the screw to hold the propellers on tighten counter clockwise or clockwise. :o

Having a blonde moment.

unless these are some kind of super screw, shirly you just turn them whichever way the post on the motor is threaded?

You start with the thread. Clockwise thread should be configured for an anti-clockwise motor; AC thread configured for a C motor. That way the prop nut will naturally tighten with the motor rotation.

Thanks!

And ye, new nuts on next prop purchase I think.

I've always had a bit of trouble flying 3rd person, keep getting my left and right mixed up occasionally... I was considering getting trainer software an d hooking up my Tx until I came across this free app for android.

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.Creativeworld.QuadcopterFX&hl=en

I am sure you can get similar ones for iPhone, but today having played on the phone for about 4 hours over the course of a couple of weeks when the weather has been too windy or wet, I went out and flew with any issues what so ever. It was awesome :D

Thinking of a winter project and building something for the first time.

Like the look of the various 250's but is there something relatively cheap that I could build and fit a go pro with a gimble to???

That's great thing! Just had a little play and it seems pretty good. Must resist temptation now to play with that instead of working. Blimmin groundskeepers were inconsiderately mowing my lunchtime flying site today, much to my annoyance. And it had stopped raining too for an hour or so :(

Depends what you call cheap really? To lift a gopro/gimbal you are going to need something with 9" or 10" props I would imagine.

Frame can cost anywhere between £10 and £200
Motors £40-£300
ESC's £40 - £150
Flight Controller £20-£300
Batteries £ 30 - as much as you want to spend
FPV Gear - £100 - £150
Rx&Tx - £50-£250
Gimbal & Controller £100 - ???

If you have an idea of budget and what bits you have already, we can maybe spec you one up :)

Virtual proxy shopping is almost as much as doing it for yourself!

Thanks for that gandhi.

Parts - nil
Budget - always a worry when I think cheap and end up as double or more!

Looking for cheap end of things for a bit of fun - nothing serious (would probably go for a phantom if I was serious about it!)

Would literally be starting from scratch !

Hmmm,

I'd probably start small and cheap then! Breakage is almost inevitable at the beginning. Especially so if you're not using a GPS enabled controller. It does take a reasonable level of skill to fly one without GPS (a skill I am sadly still lacking at the moment!)

250 quads are inherently cheap and fun, plus you can add in more power as you get more confident. Spares are cheap and you can slap FPV and a Mobius on it when you're ready, but no gimbal sadly.

One from this morning. Such a beautiful start, and it was supposed to be a full day's shoot, but we got rained off shortly after :(.

yeah - think that's the route for me. 250 to start with I think!

I ended up doing this, but then got carbon fibre frame and a few other nice bits, the cost soon spirals out of control haha.

Yes, deep or clever pockets needed!

To be honest, it's not that bad compared to some of my previous hobbies. At least, that's what I tell myself. No one part tends to be prohibitively expensive.

It's just that my mind works like this;

Broken it,
need more power,
cool new frame and don't want to cannibalise/sell the last one,
maybe a hexa would be fun,
how about 6" props?,
MORE POWER,
**** I've broken it again,
best put some lights on it,
now I need some proper tools,
MORE POWER
run out of heat shrink,
ooooh, now that's a good idea,
MORE POWER,
now I need more batteries
Wonder if that Flight controller will make me fly better?
MORE POWER

I think I popped up a list a page or so back, mostly with links to makeitbuildit.co.uk

Worth having a look there as they will have most things you might want!

I came from having absolutely nothing to having a 250 and enough spares and tools to cope with learning (read: crashing lots) for about £200 all in. I got a radio for free, but the rest was bought new from HobbyKing and other places.

The 250 wont carry a GoPro, and now I'm in I'm really struggling to resist blowing another £200 on FPV equipment. You have been warned :p

This is how mine has ended up.

Didn't realise how close the 5" props would come to the inside body so had to rethink positioning of antennae and battery. Need some stronger / thin velcro to hold it all in place and I should be good I reckon.
