Modded the gimbal so it sits closer to the frame and has plastic mounts so if it crashes again it should break away instead of splitting my gopro open again. Everythings plugged in for now, but once it has a few flights under its belt i'll be cutting/soldering/neatening it all up.

This frame is also miles better to set up than the talon v2 i had before. Nice materials on the v2 but the design is terrible and it takes an age to set it all up again if you're using landing gear :(

Myself and couple of mates want to get into a bit of quadcopter flying. Whats the best cheaper quad at the moment to learn the basics. I want to learn to fly with the intent of getting a larger quad for video, and my mates just want to race about and have fun.

there seems to be so many, the models i have been looking at are:

hubsan x4
Heli-Max 1SQ
Blade NANO QX

budget up to £60-70

any suggestions would be appreciated!

Can you please give me a breakdown of the frame/parts etc - would be very interested in this as just recently got a gopro and fancy a winter project to build something like this!

The Hubsan X4 is cheap an cheerful.

If you can afford it go for the Nano. It's better built, has better batteries and very durable. Although the hubsan is resilient, motors fail if hit too hard, so expect some more maintenance to be had.

Problem with the nano's price, is that it starts becoming a significant investment that could otherwise be dropped into a 250 quad.

If you want quick fun and an excellent stocking filler, the Cheerson CX-10 is a great toy too. No reloadable battery though (it's replaceable but built in).

thanks for the tips chaps, what you said about the investment thing rings true for me. As I can see myself wanting a bigger better model which I can attach my gopro to.

ordered a hubsan

Sure thing :D

Hobbyking q450 frame with integrated pcb (dji f450 clone) £7.50

KK2.1.5 flight controller £15.50

4 Afro 30a esc's £8.68 each

NTM 28-26 1200kv motors £10.20 each (i'd probably get a slightly slower motor if doing it again... 1100kv or lower

Tarot 2d gimbal £80 (mines a mk1 off ebay)

Turnigy 10 x 4.5 propellers £2 ish a pack of 4

Receiver and transmitter module £25

Turnigy 9xr transmitter £60

Couple of other little bits, led strips at at £3 a metre and video transmitter and receiver at around £30 for the pair.

So all that for around £300 depending on where you buy it all from. If you mounted the gopro directly to the frame to begin with though and didn't have the wireless video/screen you would be looking at around £180 for all of that :D

First run with my Skyzone goggles that arrived, take off is 39 seconds in, very weird getting used to the FPV view hence the dodgy first take off haha.

Lots of fun though.

edit: no mobius yet for recording so you get potato view video. :)

Looks like you have the perfect place to fly, large field at the bottom of the garden.

*edit* Nice flight. Ill eventually get round to doing fpv.

Dunno if any of you have seen this?

but if you were after a CF hexa that is spookily similar to mine? :D

Very tempted with this, I like the fact it has a spot for video tx especially with the hole for the antenna which will stop the connector getting damaged. How are you finding a 6 rotor's compared to 4? Also what batteries and flight time you getting?

The bit (i think) you're talking about is on the dirty plate at the bottom, and I'm not sure I'd want to put my vtx there, it's a bit vulnerable in a crash and the bottom plate is only held on by 6(!) threaded rubber bobbins so any crash is likely to shear them off pretty quickly. I left mine off as I don't plan on running a go-pro under-slung and the battery on mine goes on top.

I'm running the sunnysky 2204 2300kv and 5x4 props with 2200mah 35c 3s Nanotechs. Emax 12a ESC's. Not sure what the current AUW is but I suspect somewhere around 730g without the FPV equipment. Flight time is around 8 mins currently and everything comes down fairly cool. Hovers around 35% throttle at the mo.

Benefits of 6 motors over 4?

  • Bigger frame so less cramped.
  • Minimum 50% More thrust (also 50% more weight I reckon)
  • Potential for shed loads more thrust with 4s
  • Potential for more thrust than you can handle with 4s and 6x3 props (with extended arms)
  • Has more authority in turns

Generally, I prefer the way it flies over my 250 H. It's less twitchy, more stable, has better yaw authority and is less prone to sliding out or dipping during hard turns. It doesn't flip and roll as fast, but I think at least part of that is due to the size.

Will get some bigger (3300mah) and maybe some 4s batteries in the near future.

My 250really does not like the wind at all. Maybe I should get my backside into gear and build a hex? :p Still haven't rebuilt my 250 with the shiny new PDB... Where is all the time disappearing to?

If it's flying, don't F with it!

And Syndicate wars lol. I remember playing the original Syndicate on the Amiga!

Get a hex. One to fly whilst the other ones on the bench. Unless you do what i did on Sunday and that was break both of them. Was a glorious, still and sunny morning though!
