Multirotor, multicopter and quadcopter discussion - The Drone thread

Flite Test did a wing which launched a quad which launched another quad which launched a mini quad which delivered a stick of gum :p

The Flite Test guys are awesome - seeing the aircraft they built that had a functioning microwave on it was nuts haha

That and the circle wing craft they got airborne then flew their quads through it repeatedly (until they started just trying to down it ha) was what made FPV seem like many funs :D

Russ, what kind of speed does your Octo do? Watching the vids on your YouTube it looks sedate and slow as it wafts, but then you realise how high it is and it must be seriously shifting to get some of the pans.

PS, epic skills keeping that white 4x4 in shot as you hover above it!

Nice video russ! No banging dubstep? :D

Ha, no, sorry :p

About 30mph, but at that speed you risk the front props coming into shot and generally lower stability.

There's a few aerial shots with cars in this WIP production as well. Was good fun!

Thanks, do you re-use them or once they come off is the lock ruined?

I've used standard M5 nuts on Multistar motors before with nothing but a blob of blue locltite. Never had any issues with my nuts :D On the DYS1806 motors I'm still using the stock bullet nuts, no locktite and somehow haven't managed to lose them! Says more about the amount of flying time I've got in lately though :p

Even a well worn nyloc will have enough friction to stop it spinning freely. The problem with the bullets is once they come lose they will spin freely and unwind themselves, pop off the top and fly away, closely followed by the prop, and then your quad falling from the sky.

Not that I've had that happen... of course ;)

So, having recently bought a 3D printer, one of the projects on my list is to do a 'cheapish' Quad/Hex-Copter..

I can find a few designs out there, but since there are clearly some experts in here, I wouldn't mind some advice on
1. What's a good entry level radio/receiver
2. What controllers do people recommend? Ideally GPS/Auto hover, and that kind of thing, I'd like to try to let my son have a go, so the easier it is, the better
3. What size? I think something 30cm accross or so would be quite stable, I've tried an X4 the other day and it's so tiny, it was not that stable, and hard to see at moderate distances.
4. What about motors?

I think £150 for the 4 main items above would be a possibly starting budget, is that possible?

Yep, I have had two props come off in flight with the bullet bolts they come with. I then started doing it so tight I ended up snapping two shafts clean off (pushed a small screw driver through the holes and tightened). Anyway I ordered some M4 nyloc nuts off ebay.
